TREE CITY BOARD MEETING
January 8, 2015

VOTING MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman John Williams, Tome Rowe, Pat Simmons and Mary Yoder

OTHERS PRESENT: Sandra Waters Parks & Recreation Director, Doyle Wyant Parks & Recreation Landscaper, Greg Moser Parks & Recreation Maintenance Division, Jeff Ikerd US Forest Service and Alex Fulbright City of Newton Planning Department.

MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 6TH MEETING WERE READ AND APPROVED

OLD BUSINESS:
Doyle Wyant told the board the large Willow Oak had been removed and stump ground at a total cost of $2,525.00 by Jeffery Cline & assisted by Wise Tree Service. He plans to plant 2 small ornamental trees, new shrubs and will mulch the entire area by spring of this year. He is working on a drawing for this area with cost estimates to be presented to the Tree Board & Appearance Commission.

Eastview Cemetery – Greg & Doyle reported that 8 to 9 trees had been removed due to splitting, rotting and encroaching upon graves; one Maple tree and the rest were Cedars.

Southside Park – Doyle is removing all the dead Box Elders and re-planting new Weeping Willows and Cypress trees.

2 Pink Magnolias – Doyle removed a dead Kousa Dogwood and installed a new Pink Camellia.

Webinar Workshop – Sandra gave members handouts on the webinar series each member attended.

NEW BUSINESS:
Alex Fulbright from the Planning Department made each member a copy of an aerial view of Northside Park for GIS Mapping & tree inventory. He is willing to assist Greg and Tom Rowe in starting the Tree inventory project. Jeff Ikerd also gave members handouts on Shade and Hazard Tree Data sheets to assist with tree inventory.

Sandra asked if any member would like to be responsible for submitting articles to the new PIO for the Citywide Newsletter. This Tree Board needs exposure like other Committees & Commissions in the City. Articles need to go in Citywide Newsletter, Webpage and Facebook. After much discussion, ex- officio member Greg Moser volunteered to work on this project.

Sandra gave everyone information on the Urban Forestry Grant Program, Grant – writing workshops and the Urban & Community Forestry Program. Any members wishing to attend the grant writing workshops let Sandra know.

Sandra reviewed the Tree Board membership terms and expirations. Two members first terms will expire in March; Johnny Williams and Max Bolick. Everyone is hoping they will both renew their terms for 3 more years.

NEXT MEETING: THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 2015 AT 11:00 A.M. DOWNSTAIRS AT THE RECREATION CENTER.

Respectfully submitted,

Max Bolick, Secretary
