______

Algebra I serves as a transition from the math obtained in elementary and middle school to high school level math. The fundamentals that the student will acquire in this class will be utilized in higher-level math.

Areas of Study

Areas of study for Algebra I include: rational numbers and their applications, one-variable equations and inequalities, linear functions and inequalities, systems of linear functions, quadratic functions, polynomials, factoring, and exponential functions.

Class Format

The course will consist of lectures, exploratory group activities, problem-solving activities, class work, and homework assignments. This will provide opportunities for students to learn independently, from each other in the form of groups, as well as from their instructor.

Grading Guidelines

Six weeks averages will be calculated as follows

Major Average = 60% (2 or 3 major assignments)

Daily Average = 30% (at least 8 daily assignments)

Homework Average = 10%

Test Days:

Test days for the Math department are scheduled forMonday and Thursday. In the event of an absence on a scheduled test day, students may make up that test within 1 week before or after school. Students must make arrangements to make up the test with me.

Retest/Redo

PAP-Students will be given the opportunity to retest on eachtest. They must correct their test either on their own, with a peer or after school in tutoring, then retest within a week of the original test.

Regular- Students may correct each test ontheir own, with a peer or after school in tutoring by showing work or explaining their work and they will receive half of their points back.

The students may redo any daily assignment to raise the grade until the end of the six week.

Homework Assignments

In order for the student to master the skills being taught, there will be up to 4 homework assignments assigned per week.

**The penalty for late homework is: 10pts for each day late, up to 5 days. After the 5th day, a 50 will be given for the assignment. Regardless of how late an assignment is, a submitted assignment will always be accepted.

Teacher-Led Tutoring Will be arranged by individual teacher. Sometimes there is a need to change these times. If there is a change, students will be notified ASAP and there will be a message on my website.

Supplies & Notebook:

All students are required to bring the following supplies to class every day:

  • A spiral notebook with a pocket folder or a 3-ring binder with pockets and paper
  • Pencil or pen (pencil preferred as we do tend to make mistakes in math!)

All students are required to keep a notebook. The purpose of the binder is to keep students organized! It is important to have all papers, particularly graded work. This will help if there is a grade discrepancy.

Textbook: You will find the online Algebra I textbook at

Your child will be given the username and password in class.

Conduct:

I expect all of the following classroom rules/procedures to be observed and respected by every student.

  • Be prepared (bring supplies, planner and homework)
  • Be seated and begin warm-up immediately when the tardy bell rings
  • Participate in class activities.
  • Be polite and respectful to each other.
  • Absolutely no eating, drinking, grooming or non-math related activity without specified permission.

EOC Testing Date: May 1, 2017

Grading Guidelines Grade Repair:

Students will have the opportunity to receive instruction to recover six weeks grades. When a student enrolls in the Grade Recovery Class, the students will receive quality instruction. The curriculum will recapture any skills they are lacking so that they are prepared to receive credit and also be prepared for the EOC/TAKS in April or May. This intervention plan may include students attending after school Grade Recovery or Grade Recovery during the day. The highest grade a student can earn is 75%. This grade will replace the failed six weeks grade. Students enrolled in Pre-AP courses may enroll in grade repair and receive Pre-AP credit for up to one- six weeks per semester.
