Mr. RiottoAP Gov.
2018-2019CLASSROOM POLICIES
LEARNING:You come to this class to learn. If your intent is otherwise, you
don’t belong. Repeated disruption of the learning environment will
result in your removalfrom the class at my discretion.
ATTITUDE:If you have one, leave it at the door; there is no room for it here.
This class operates on mutual respect. We can all learn from each
other.
ATTENDANCE:Good attendance is crucial to good performance. Therefore, you
should be present, in body and mind, every day. Remember, 14
absenceswill result in loss of course credit, as per state law.
If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to make up any
missed work. You must come to me - I will not go to you. Any
work missed must be made up as soon as possible (on your own
time, outside of class), within the number of days equal to the
number of days you were absent. If it is not, it will be a zero.
LATENESS:Lateness is a sign of disrespect and will not be tolerated.
Therefore, you shouldbe on time, and prepared, every day.
Repeated lateness will result in detention, as per school policy.
If you are late for a legitimate reason, you must have a pass signed
by a teacher or administrator. If you do not, the lateness will not be
excused and will resultin detention, as per school policy. No
teacher may excuse you from this class.
PREPAREDNESS:You should come to class prepared every day: prepared to listen,
learn, and ask thoughtful, relevant questions; and prepared with a
pen, pencil,hi-liter, notebook, covered textbook, folder (for lots of
handouts), and homework, at the very least.
Do not come to class and then ask to leave to get something you
forgot. Bring everything you need with you the first time, when you
arrive ontime. Lack of preparation will result in a zero for the day.
ELECTRONICS:NO cell phones! Turn them OFF and put them AWAY /
OUT OF REACH and SIGHT and SOUND or I will confiscate them,
as per school policy.
DISMISSAL:If class should finish early, remain in your seats. Do not crowd the
doorway – it is a fire hazard.
BATHROOM:Bathroom use will be restricted to emergencies only, and will be
monitored for abuse.
EATING:There will be no food and drink, including gum and candy, in the
classroom. Medical exceptions require a school nurse note.
HYGIENE:Cover your mouth with your elbow when you yawn, cough, or
sneeze. Bring in your own tissues, Purell, hand wipes, cough
drops, etc.
TESTS/QUIZZES:All regular tests and quizzes will be announced at least 2 days in
advance. Pop quizzes, however, are a possibility at any time.
All tests count twice. All quizzes count once.
You do not get to keep your tests and quizzes.
HOMEWORK:All homework is due in person on paper (you print it) at the
beginning of the class period. If you do not have it when I ask for it,
you will receive a grade penalty or a zero, depending on the
assignment. You may email it to me ONLY IF YOU ARE ABSENT.
All homework MUST be submitted to TURNITIN.COM before
7:30 am the day it is due. There will be a grade penalty if it is not.
This is IN ADDITION TO, NOT IN PLACE OF, handing it to me.
Most homework will be letter graded; some will be check graded.
PAPERS:All papers should be typed, double spaced (2.0),in Arial 12 font
(like this packet) with standard Microsoft Word margins.
There will be grade penalties for not following these directions.
Research papers must be signed by both your proofreading partner
and at least one parent.
All papers (research and regular) will receive one overall letter grade
which will be lowered one full letter for each day it is late, even if you are
absent. This is an extension of the school research paper policy. It is
your responsibility to ensure that the paper arrives in my hand at the due
time.
Some grading will be point based, some will be holistic / impressionistic.
Emphasis will be on content and organization, but vocabulary, writing
style, paragraph formation, sentence structure, capitalization, punctuation,
spelling, neatness, and overall appearance will be considered. Pay
attention to detail and have your partner proofread and sign your paper.
The letter-to-number translation is as follows:A+ 100, A 95, A- 90
B+ 88, B 85, B- 80
C+ 78, C 75, C- 70
D+ 68, D 65, D- 60
If you cut class on a day an assignment is due, the assignment will be a
zero.
Papers will be returned when all have been graded, not before.
Do not ask.
PARTICIPATION:You are expected to participate regularly by volunteering to read,
asking and answering questions, and responding to the issues
discussed. Participation that disrespects me or the other students,
or disrupts the learning environment, will be penalized. Chronic
non-participation will also be penalized.
GRADING:Marking period grades will be based on 3 categories:
Tests/Quizzes/Papers = 65%, Homework = 25%,
Class Participation = 10%.
HELP:I am available for extra help before and after school and at lunch, by
advance appointment only. If you need help or have a personal matter
you would like to discuss, make an appointment in advance to see me.
Do not bring up personal situations (like grades, placement
recommendations, etc.) in public.

additionswill have the same effect as if they had been written.
