6th STEM Day Extravaganza 2017 at Morgan State University by Baltimore MUREP Aerospace Academy (BMAA)
A Summary
The Baltimore MUREP Aerospace Academy (BMAA) project at Morgan State University hosted the 6th STEM Day Extravaganza on Saturday September 9th, 2017 in the Hill Field House on Morgan’s Campus. The event ran from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Hill Field House at 1700, E. Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251. The BMAA Day Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Extravaganza was a fun-filled day of various hands-on minds-on STEM activities for students from PK to 12th grade, their parents/family members and the general public. The day’s event was designed to encourage youth to pursue careers in STEM at the post-secondary level and provide parents and family members with educational materials and techniques on how to keep their children interested in academics, especially the STEM field. There were numerous FREE educational materials and opportunities about STEM for PK-12 students, teachers and parents. Exhibitors and presenters from various national, regional and local STEM organizations and agencies were present to provide a wide variety of hands-on STEM activities for participants. The exhibitors included: American Society for Microbiology, Baltimore MAA Instructors, Carnegie Institute for Science - Bio Eyes, It’s A Noisy Planet, Maryland Science Center, Maryland Space Grant Consortium, MUREP, Paragon TEC, NASA Glenn Research Center, National Electronics Museum, NIH Center for Scientific Review, NSTA/Army Educational Outreach Program - eCybermission, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Space Telescope Science Institute, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S Coast Guard and Baltimore MAA STAR Lab Planetarium. The following organizations contributed STEM educational materials that were distributed at the Extravaganza: DTLR – Down Town Locker Room, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), WERQ FM-92Q and NASA- GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center). The STEM Extravaganza was a free event for the whole family. By the end of the day's event, we had a total of 420 participants in attendance (231 PK-12 students, 141 adults and 48 exhibitors). Welcome and opening remarks were by Dr. Hongtao Yu, Dean, School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences, at Morgan State University. This was followed by greetings from Office of the mayor Baltimore City, Ms. Kendra Parlock who is Director, Mayor’s Office of Sustainable Solutions. Ms. Parlock read and presented the site director, Dr. Jonathan Wilson a Proclamation from the Mayor of Baltimore Catherine E. Pugh which declared September 9, 2017 as “STEM Extravaganza Day” in Baltimore. We acknowledge with gratitude the contributions and support from Morgan State University, the STEM Day Committee, Athletics Dept., Baltimore Sun, WEAA 88.9 FM, 95.1 SHINE-FM, and all of our exhibitors, contributors, volunteers, parents, and teachers.
