PROCEDURE TO CALL 911

1.  State your emergency.

2.  Stay Calm.

3.  Give your name and address.

4.  Listen. Allow 911 employee to direct conversation.

5.  Be prepared to answer questions in a clear, calm manner.

6.  Remain on the telephone. DO NOT hang up until the dispatcher says to do so.

PROCEDURE TO EVACUATE A SCHOOL SITE

Evacuation of the Building:

Students and staff should leave the building in an orderly fashion using the primary evacuation routes. These routes should be selected considering students with disabilities. The assembly area will be on the football field. This is selected as a safe location on the school campus away from the building and any emergency response equipment, which may arrive at the school. Roll should be taken and attendance reported to the Principal/designee.

Evacuation of the School Site (leaving the campus):

This action should be implemented if it not safe to remain on the school campus. The students and staff should evacuate the building as above. The campus should be left by vehicle or by walking.

BOMB THREATS

In the event that the school receives a bomb threat, by letter or telephone, the following procedures will be accomplished:

1.  If the bomb threat is in the form of a letter, note the manner in which it was delivered, who found it and where it was found. Take care while handling the message by immediately placing it in an envelope so that possible fingerprints may be detected. Inform the Principal/Designee immediately.

2.  If the bomb threat is a telephone call, keep the caller on the line. Delay the caller with statements such as, “I am sorry, I did not understand you, What did you say?” Note the time the call was received, manner of the caller, background noises and what the caller is saying. Inform the Principal/Designee immediately.

3.  The principal will immediately notify the police and fire departments by calling 911.

4.  If the suspected bomb is in a corridor, modify evacuation routes to bypass the corridor.

5.  Evacuate students using the primary evacuation routes. The support and security teams will make sure the building is evacuated.

6.  Teachers will take roll of students and notify the principal/designee, as well as emergency response personnel of any missing students.

7.  Do not return to the building until emergency response officials determine the building is safe.

BOMB THREAT CHECKLIST

CRIMINAL ACT

The incident could occur if a crime has been committed on school campus.

1.  Staff will notify Principal/Designee if they know of a criminal act that has been committed on the school campus.

2.  The principal will notify the police (dial 911).

3.  If there is a victim of the crime care for the victim. Provide first aid/medical attention if necessary.

4.  The Principal/Designee will identify all parties involved (if possible). Identify witness, if any.

5.  Deny access to crime scene until police arrive.

6.  If an individual is armed with any type of weapon all staff will USE EXTREME CAUTION. Do not attempt to remove the weapon for their possession, allow police to do so.

Fire (onsite)

This incident could occur if the school building is on fire: should any such event endanger the students or staff, the following will be accomplished.

Warning: The school fire alarm sounds.

1.  All staff will proceed to evacuate all students using the primary evacuation routes.

2.  The Principal/Designee will notify the fire department (Call 911).

3.  An inspection will be performed to be sure that all students and personnel have left the building using the support and security teams.

4.  Staff will take roll and make visible their green evacuation sign to signal that all students in the classroom are accounted for. Staff will report any missing students to the principal/designee and to emergency response personnel.

5.  No one will return to the building until the Fire Department determines that the school building is safe to enter.

FIRE (offsite) Wildland Fire

This even could occur if a fire offsite, such as a wildland fire, threatens or is near the school building. Should any such event endanger the students or staff, the following will be accomplished.

1.  The Principal/Designee will determine if the evacuation of the school site is necessary.

2.  If evacuation is necessary staff will evacuate building using the primary evacuation plan routes.

3.  Contact local fire department (Call 911).

4.  If evacuation is necessary staff will take roll and make visible their green evacuation sign to signal that all students in the classroom are accounted for. Staff will report any missing students to the principal/designee and to emergency response personnel.

5.  An inspection will be performed to be sure that all students and personnel have left the building using the support and security teams.

6.  No one will return to the building until the Fire Department determines that the school building is safe to enter.

MISSING CHILD

This incident could occur if a child suddenly disappears.

1.  The Principal/Designee will immediately notify police (Dial 911).

2.  The Principal/Designee will immediately close and secure the campus. No individuals will be permitted to leave campus. Limit access to the campus. Do not allow unauthorized individuals to come onsite.

3.  School Search and Rescue Teams will thoroughly search school campus.

SEVERE WINDSTORM/WEATHER

(Tornado)

Severe weather can be accompanied by high winds. If this type of weather poses any risk to the staff or students the following shall be accomplished.

Warning: An alert message will be broadcast over the weather radio located in the Principal’s office.

1.  The Principal will give the warning of severe weather over the intercom.

2.  Staff and students should take cover in areas at the center of the building (ex. Library, interior classrooms, restrooms.) STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.

3.  Staff will take roll and report any missing students to the Principal or designee.

4.  Staff will remain with students near an inside wall while taking cover.

5.  The Principal/Designee will monitor the weather radio and AM radio stations.

6.  Students and staff will remain in the sheltered areas of the building until winds have subsided and it is safe to return to the classrooms.

EARTHQUAKE

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE:

If indoors:

1.  Stay inside, move away from windows, shelves, heavy objects or furniture which may fall over. Take cover under a table or desk. Instruct the students to "DUCK-COVER-HOLD".

2.  In halls, stairways, or other areas where cover is not available, move to an interior wall.

3.  In library, immediately move away from windows and bookshelves. Take appropriate cover.

4.  In the multi-use room, take cover under the tables or move close to the interior walls away from windows.

If outdoors:

1.  Move to an open space, away from buildings and overhead power lines. Lie down or crouch low to the ground (legs will not be steady). Keep looking around to be aware of dangers, which may demand movement.

AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

1.  Staff will evaluate students to see if any student needs medical attention.

2.  If any student is hurt and in need of medical attention the principal/designee will be informed immediately and first aid teams will administer first aid until medical assistance arrives.

3.  Staff will evacuate the building using the primary evacuation routes.

4.  Staff will take roll of students in classroom and inform the principal/designee of any missing students.

5.  School designated Search and Rescue teams will make sure the building is evacuated.

SCHOOL LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES

This incident could occur if a belligerent person or armed person appeared at the school site. Should such an individual threaten the safety of students or staff, the following shall be accomplished.

1.  An intercom announcement (along with a 2 Way radio announcement) will be made by the Principal/Designee that the building is in LOCKDOWN.

2.  The Principal/Designee will call 911

3.  Teachers and administrators should bring students from hallways into the nearest classroom or their designated area.

4.  Teachers will lock all classroom doors, pull down all shades and turn the lights out.

5.  Teachers will make sure that all students are away from windows and are out of the sight of anyone come down the hallways.

6.  Students that are outside will relocate to the nature trail away from the building.

7.  Students in the gymnasium will be taken into the PE office or the storage closet.

8.  Cafeteria staff will supervise students in the cafeteria during lockdowns. Students that are in the cafeteria will set against the interior wall with all access doors locked.

9.  No one will open any door within the school until the lock down is signaled to be over.

10.  If gunshots or explosions are heard all students will be directed to lie on the floor.

Responsibilities

Location of the EOC is to be determined by the site administrator (SA) in charge of disaster operation based on nature and impact of disaster.

The Site Administrator Shall:

A.  Declare an emergency.

B.  Implement the necessary plan and coordinate staff.

C.  Account for all students and staff.

D.  Establish communications with district officials

E.  Assess situations and request needed resources.

F.  Control all internal communications

G.  Approve and release any press statements and external communication.
