BOXING STEPS # 1-8

COMMENTS FROM SABUMNIM HAN CHO:

Boxing is one of the most effective ways of learning how to strike with your hands in reality fighting. Unlike traditional martial arts, boxing has evolved through competition rather than theory. Its awesome effectiveness has been tested through and through. Therefore, anyone interested in learning how to strike effectively with his/her hands should have a firm knowledge on the basics of boxing. The boxing steps will show you the most simple and effective way to learn this “sweet science.”

*Note: Backfists are not allowed in boxing.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

1)  Guard position: lean forward and tuck chin in, hands cover up to nose, elbows pointing downward, weight on toes, feet ¾ shoulder apart and in walking length, front hand slightly out in front, right leg back for right handed.

2)  Straight punch: pivot back foot and lift the heel, twist fist inward and tuck chin in.

3)  Hooks: Pivot foot and lift the heel and turn hips, lift arm parallel to the ground, thrust shoulder out, hook by popping shoulders in while shifting weight to other leg. Palm faces floor in close range and inward in far range.

4)  Uppercuts: Lean tot he side of the uppercut, push off with the same side leg, thrust shoulder up, punch by popping shoulders inward while shifting weight to other leg. Palm faces inward.

5)  Snap the punches. Retract them just as quickly.

6)  Do not wind or telegraph your punch. Power is in the leverage, not brute strength.

7)  Force-breathe out loudly each and every time punching or ducking.

8)  Do not drop hands during boxing steps. You’ll be dismissed from class or fail your belt test.

9)  Repetition is important. Do lots of bag work as well.

10) Remember, defense is what separates the good punchers from the bad.
