By the end of the second quarter, fourth grade students should be able to:

Text Comprehension

1. Demonstrate an understanding of Informational text

●Make inferences based on the text and refer to the text details to support the inferences

●Summarize the text -- including what happened and why

●Describe and use the text structure to interpret the information

●Interpret information presented in diagrams, charts, and graphs

●Define words and phrases by using context clues, a glossary, and a dictionary

2. Demonstrate an understanding of Literature

●Describe the characters, setting, or events in historical and cultural fiction

●Cite relevant details and provide text evidence when talking or writing about the text

●Compare and contrast similar topics and themes in literature of different cultures

●Summarize a story with details from the beginning, middle, and end of the reading

●Define words and phrases by using context clues

Composition

1. Write clear and focused text

●Organizes thoughts in a graphic organizer for the pre-writing process for a 5-paragraph essay

●Engages reader from beginning to end with an interesting opening, logical sequence & satisfying solution when writing 5 paragraph essay.

●Use proofreading skills and identify sentence fragments and change into a sentence.
