JOB DESCRIPTION

Post:YouthDevelopment Officer

Salary:£25,000

Hours:37.5 hours per week

Leave:20 days’ annual leave plus 11 public or statutory holidays

Responsible to:Chief Executive

Location:Based from GOLI, Schomberg House, Belfast

Overall Objective:

To grow and develop youth membership within the Orange Institutionand increase awareness of the work of the organisation amongst young people in the wider community.

Key responsibilities

  • To work as part of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland’s development team implementing a community outreach and development programme targeted at young people throughout the entire Orange family including the Junior Orange Institution and University Orange Societies.
  • To plan and deliver youth outreach and networking events which build awareness of educational courses, routes to employment, apprenticeship opportunities, interview skills and relevant bursary schemes.
  • To help foster and develop networking between young members of the Orange Institution throughout the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland’s jurisdiction.
  • To deliver initiatives aimed at young people and youth with a view to growing the membership base of the Institution. To establish links with the community of Loyal Orders and Bands throughout the operating area and wider society.
  • To liaise with young members of the Institution and Orange Societies and identify training and development needs Including the design and implementation of new relevant projects.
  • To act as an ambassador for the Orange Institution and to promote our values and vision throughout the youth, education and community sectors. The successful candidate will also be required to represent the Institution at relevant conferences and eventsand promote a professional and positive image of the organisation.
  • To establish and develop a close working relationship with external relevant cultural, educational and other statutory bodies.
  • To assist with the management of our student accommodation facility in Belfast.
  • To contribute to the GOLI public relations output including drafting articles for the Orange Standard Newspaper, social media and web site, as required.
  • To advise and assist local Orange groups working with young people particularly with regard to sources of funding, application processes, effective administration and budget control.
  • To manage and implement specific projects allocated by senior management.
  • Any other relevant duties at the discretion of the GOLI senior management team

Personnel Specification

Essential criteria(including method of assessment)

  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent (Grades A-C) to include Mathematics and English (Application form)
  • At least 2 years’experience administering budgets and planning projects to agreed costs(Application form and interview)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the current statutory requirements governing working with young people (Application form and interview)
  • At least 2 years’ experience inyouth work, community development work or a community based role involving liaison with government, local government and funding bodies (Application form and interview)
  • The ability to plan and project manage own work effectively and work on his/her own initiative, taking the lead where necessary (interview)
  • Excellent communication skills – oral and written (interview)
  • Ademonstrable knowledge and understanding ofOrangeheritage and culture (Application form and interview)
  • Evidence of building relationships with bodies external to his/her current organisation (Application form and interview)
  • Excellent IT/ Computer Literacy skills including Social Media competency (interview)
  • Applicants must have a full, current driving licence and a vehicle available for official business or access to a form of transport which will enable them to meet the requirements of the post in full (Application form)

Desirable criteria

  • A third level degree qualification or five years’ experience in a similar role. (Application form)
  • An accredited certification in Child Protection/Safeguardingtraining (Application form)
  • A detailed knowledge of the community and the voluntary sector (Interview)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and experience of working with a range of differentfunders (Interview)
  • Proven track record of using networks and connection to achieve specific organisational goals(Interview)
  • Previous experience of working in a role that involved growing the membership base (Application form and interview)
  • Previous experience of completing funding applications (Application form and interview)

NB. The Panel reserve the right to enhance the shortlisting criteria, as appropriate, in the event of a large volume of applications.

Conditions of service

  • The post is offered subject to receipt of two satisfactory references and a satisfactory Access NI check
  • The post will initially be for a fixed term period of 3 yearswith possible extension subject to funding.
  • A probationary period of 6 months will apply
  • The successful candidate will often be required to work outside normal hours and will need to be able to be adjust their working hours to meet this need (such as starting work later in the day and finishing later)

Reserve List

  • A reserve list of applicants may be drawn up for this post which would last for a maximum of 6 months.Therefore,should a similar post become vacant within this time, it may be offered to those on the reserve list, in order of merit, without further interview.
