Successful Substitutes = Successful Chapters
As members of BNI, we get results! Each week we are able to meet with each other and as we do, week after week, we build trusting relationships. Because of that, we use a system to find referrals for our chapter members. It’s part of what makes us strong and successful!
Our General Policy #5 says in part,“Attendance is critical to the group. If a member cannot attend, they may send a substitute (not a member of your chapter) to the meeting. This will not count as an absence…”
One of the ways we are able to have good attendance is through the use of a substitute and we appreciate what they do to help us in that regard.
Who can we use as a substitute? Here is a list of people you could call upon when you know you will be gone:

  • Someone who can apply
  • Customers
  • Vendors
  • Referral Partners outside BNI
  • Co-Workers or employees
  • People we network with at Chamber, Rotary, Etc.
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Spouse
  • Neighbors
  • A member from another chapter

To show our appreciation, there are several things we can do for them!
First, if they are subbing for YOU, be sure to have a wellwritten weekly presentation for them. Remember this makes them look good and in return they can make you look good. When possible, many subs appreciate having it well in advance so that they can prepare ahead of time.
It’s also always a good idea to send an email introduction to your chapter and copy your substitute on the email. Many email introductions include a summery of what they do and how they help their clients, a good referral for them and a testimonial when possible. This enables your chapter members to watch for them and already know a bit about them! By helping your subs in this way, you help them have visibility and credibility before they arrive. Many send responses and requests for one to ones.
Introducing yourself to the subs that visit your chapter is always a good practice. Many times, they are potential candidates for the chapter. A welcoming and positive attitude will make many subs decide to come back the following week to represent themselves as a visitor. Many even decide to apply because the experience was a good one! Many other subs meet our trusted members and realize they could use their services.
Remember, that using a substitute helps to keep our chapters strong. Show that you appreciate them by making it easy to represent you. Be welcoming to subs who represent our members and when appropriate, invite them back to represent themselves! Following up after with an appreciative text, email or even hand written card goes a long way.
Our substitutes do a service for us and we appreciate their help!
