II. PURPOSE

A Certified Athletic Trainer is a competent and well-trained sports medicine professional, which is recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health profession.

The primary purpose of an Athletic Trainer is to develop and implement services regarding the prevention, recognition, emergency treatment, emergency procedures/plans and rehabilitation of sports related injuries and to provide paramedical life saving services such as first aid and CPR to students participating in any school athletic activity. The Athletic Trainer also acts as a liaison and resource for student athletes, parents, physicians, coaches, administrators, other school personnel, and the community.

The development of a sound athletic training program will provide a safe and educational environment for student athletes to participate in. The safety and well being of the student athlete is of highest priority!

III. GOALS

The primary goal of the athletic training program at Kamehameha Schools is to establish a high standard of athletic health care that will create a safe environment for student athletes to participate in. The primary goal will be achieved by:

1)Education of coaches and student athletes about injury prevention, conditioning, and general health. In-services, classes, and one on one counseling will be established.

2)Preparation for an emergency situation. This will create an immediate and safe response by the athletic training staff that will prevent further injury and suffering. (Emergency Plan revised: 2015).

The record system will assist coaches and athletic trainers in designing practice schedules to minimize injuries, aid in determining equipment and supply purchasing, provide analyses of injury dates to coaches and administrators, and aid in maintaining inventory and purchasing.

5)Establish a student athletic trainers program for students interested in the field of sports medicine. Student athletic trainers will be required to perform certain duties in the athletic training room as well as outside on the field. They will be treated with the same respect, as do the certified athletic trainers. Students will be expected to study and learn basic human anatomy & physiology taught by the athletic training staff. Communication with the athletic training staff; student athletes, coaches, parents, Doctors, school officials, and community is of utmost importance. Professionalism is a requirement!
