The Orkney a Team Played Host to Their Counterparts from Shetland Last Weekend

The Orkney ‘A’ team played host to their counterparts from Shetland last weekend. This was the second attempt at the match as Shetland had been fogbound the week before. The home team were missing a substantial number of first team regulars but those who played can take heart from their own performances. Marty Flett and Ross Groundwater played a very good game at first mens and were unfortunate not to force the game to three sets. Highlight of the night for the Orkney team was the performance of their first ladies Elaine Gray & Moira Nicolson. Against strong opposition they won a close first set 15-12. This seem to rattle the Shetland pairing as they never really recovered and were always playing catch up in the second set. Moira and Elaine continued to dominate and went on to secure Orkney’s only victory of the evening winning the second set 15-7. An impressive win against such strong opponents. Shetland showed their strength in depth as they won all the mixed games relatively comfortably. The trophy was presented to the Shetland captain Kevin Smith by past county player Melvin Wick, who also sponsored the match. Many thanks Melvin from all at Orkney Badminton Association.
