Job Description

TITLE OF POST: Family Support Worker

SALARY GRADE:Scale H, Points 25-28

HOURS OF WORK:37 hours per week, term-time only+ 5 training days

PURPOSE OF JOB

  • To provide a professional, high quality, customer-led, family support service, which improves outcomes for families and young people by alleviating barriers to learning.
  • To be focused on and committed to the NLS Core Purpose.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide high quality, effective and inclusive structures, processes and practice in supporting families and students, enabling academic, personal, social and healthy development of referred students.

  • High and increasing rates of attendance
  • High quality relationships between parents and the school
  • High rates of parental and student satisfaction
  • Effective participation in multi-professional teams
  • Effective communication between parents, students, other professionals and the school
  • Higher rates of parental engagement with the school
  • High quality parenting programmes and family learning activities throughout the year
  • Positive changes in family behaviour as a result of the provision of parenting courses
  • Achievement of CAF objectives
  • High levels of student achievement
  • Positive value –added for students
  • Implementation of the school’s safeguarding policy, following procedures for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people

KEY TASKS:

May well include the following, but to be agreed with the person appointed:

  • Liaising between home and school regarding attendance issues. Designing, implementing and evaluating plans to re-engage persistent absentees and reducing casual absence
  • Providing proactive liaison between school, home and community, in response to referrals from the Pastoral Team
  • Offering support and advice to parents and families on a wide variety of parenting, child and family issues
  • Delivering parenting interventions on an individual and group basis
  • Being an advocate for families to help school understand their needs more clearly
  • Developing effective intervention strategies for families, based on an understanding of their needs
  • Making referrals and working with other agencies to access support
  • Positively engaging hard-to-reach parents and vulnerable families
  • Providing crisis intervention
  • Developing programs and activities that promote family learning (eg. Family Learning Week)
  • Working with young people individually as needed
  • Being a lead professional as required in CAF meetings

The above is in addition to time-limited tasks associated with specific projects related to school improvement, which may be agreed from time to time with the Headteacher, as appropriate.
