Dear Panther Staff and Families,
We are excited to present the first installment of our monthly newsletter. Throughout the year, this will be a resource for information on the Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Pine View Middle School.

Why is PVMS implementing the Middle Years Programme?

The Middle Years Programme is an exciting opportunity for students, families and staff. Classroom instruction in the MYP focuses on exploration, project based learning and interdisciplinary studies with a global focus. PVMS is an ideal school to implement the MYP because beginning in 2016, some of our rising 6th graders will be coming from Sanders Memorial Elementary, which is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) school. The majority of our PVMS students matriculate to Land O’ Lakes High School, which has had the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) for many years. There was a need in our feeder pattern for an innovative program to bridge those programs and we responded with the Middle Years Programme.

What is the current state of the MYP? What will happen in the future?

PVMS applied to be a Candidate School in April and was approved In May. Being a Candidate School means that we are authorized to begin the process of implementing the Middle Years Programme. Candidate schools make consistent steps over time toward the ultimate goal of becoming an IB World School. Our goal is to become a World School by the time our current Year One (6th grade) students are in Year Three (8th grade).

What are the Learner Profiles?

The Learner Profiles are a group of traits that we strive to display to become the best people possible. As International Baccalaureate (IB) learners, we strive to be: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced and Reflective.

How will the Learner Profiles be built into the culture of PVMS?

As a school, we will focus on a different Learner Profile every month. Students can be recognized for displaying the month’s profile by a teacher or another student and be eligible for a reward and the possibility of becoming a Student of the Month. In September, we will focus on being Principled, which means we will talk about acting with integrity and honesty. That Profile ties in with the beginning of the school year because we are readjusting to being in school and refreshing ourselves on appropriate school behavior.

You will see signs displaying the Learner Profiles throughout the school. The profiles will also be posted above the white board in each classroom. Teachers will have a second set of magnetic Learner Profiles that will make it easier to highlight which Profiles are relevant to the current classroom activity.
