Subject: [gmla] Loop Roads

Do any of you know about new loop road projects in any metropolitan region other than Houston? And what the status is, if there are any?

Thanks,

David

»  3/23/09 We have an extension of a loop road proposed in Charleston. It's call the Mark Clark Expressway or I-526. You can learn more about it at www.no526.com. We are fighting the extension and have come up with an alternative that is to fix the traffic problems at their source, rather than build a bypass. The alternative that we are asking the DOT to study involves improving upon an existing (or nonexistent) network at key choke points along the region so that local traffic can get off of the major roads. You can learn about the alternative at the site above or at www.newwaytowork.com. We hired Glatting Jackson to come up with the alternative and we are working with Rick Hall with Hall Planning and Engineering to make sure the modeling gets done right by the DOT. We are at "phase I" in the EIS process and they have promised that our alternative will be considered in this first phase.

»  3/23/09 The DC region once proposed an all-encompassing outer beltway in 1988 but we've successfully fought back. However, one segment which they have started building and we are still trying to stop is the Intercounty Connector in Maryland (about 16 miles long and about 15 miles out from DC). Another segment called the "Tri County Parkway" and "Battlefield Bypass" is in Virginia and a part of the long-fought Western Bypass is under study and we are challenging. It's over 30 miles outside DC.
