Continuing Medical Education (CME) Policy
- Policy:Policy for Continuing Medical Education (CME)
- Purpose: To clearly state the continuing education requirements and methods of obtaining CME to individuals participating in the delivery of services within the echocardiographyfacility.
- Procedure:
- To meet CME requirements the Medical Director of the echocardiographyfacility must document at least 15 hours of CME relevant to echocardiography over a period of threeyears.10 hours must be Category 1 AMA. The other five echocardiography-related hours may be non-category I (i.e., ASE CME). However, if the Medical Director has completed formal training in Level III echocardiography in the past three years, or has successfully acquired Testamur status by passing the Examination of Special Competence in Adult echocardiography by the NBE within the past three years, the CME requirement is fulfilled. To meet CME requirements the Technical Director of the echocardiographyfacility must document at least 15 hours of echocardiography related continuing education over a period of three years. All hours must be relevant to echocardiography. However, if the Technical Director has acquired an appropriate credential within the past three years, the CME requirement is considered fulfilled.
- To meet CME requirements the medical staff members must document at 15 hours of CME relevant to echocardiography over a period of three years. 10 hours must be Category 1 AMA. The other five echocardiography-related hours may be non-category I (i.e., ASE CME). For accreditation standards CME must be AMA Category I and relevant to echocardiography. However, if the medical staff member has completed formal training in Level II echocardiography within the past three years or if the medical staff member has successfully acquired Testamur status by passing the Exam of Special Competence in Adult echocardiography by the NBE within the past three years the CME requirement is considered fulfilled.
- To meet CME requirements the technical staff members must document at least 15 hours of echocardiography-related CME over a period of three years. All hours must be relevant to echocardiography. However, if the technical staff member has completed a formal training program within the past three years in ultrasound or cardiovascular technology which includes verified didactic and supervised clinical experience in echocardiography the CME requirement is considered fulfilled. These programs must be accredited by CAAHEP or Canadian Medical Association. Or if the technical staff member has successfully acquired an appropriate credential within the past three years the CME requirement is consider fulfilled.
- The appointed staff member of the echocardiographyfacility is responsible for maintaining the CME file. Within the file will be the CME credits the member(s) of the echocardiographyfacility have obtained in the specified time frame that the facility tracks CMEs.
- The CME file will be maintained: In the Echo Facility Quality Improvment File under CME requirements.
- All echocardiographyfacilitymedical and technical staff members will submit their CME credits when they are earned.
- The echocardiographyfacility staff is required to attend either local, regional or national conferences in order to obtain their CME credits.
- The echocardiographyfacility staff is required to attend two in-house Quality Improvement(QI) conferences per year.
