Statement by the CzechRepublic

The CzechRepublic aligns itself with the EU statement.

Madam Special Rapporteur,

We wish to thank you for the oral progress report on the situation in Myanmar/ Burma. Following the escalation of violence in RakhineState since October last year, international monitoring ofdevelopments in the country ismore crucial than ever. The CzechRepublic fully supports your efforts aimed at improving the rule of law, respect for human rights and the facilitation of the democratic transition in Myanmar/ Burma.

We welcome the recent appointment of members of the Fact Finding Mission established by the Human Rights Council resolution 34/22. We wishthat the mission is able to start its work on the ground soon. In this regard, we encourage the government of Myanmar/ Burma to fully cooperate with the Fact Finding Mission and grant itfull and unrestricted access to the country.

We appreciate the government’s cooperation with the Special Rapporteur and call for further facilitation of her visits to and direct dialogue with all stakeholders in Myanmar/ Burma. We also welcome the interim report of the Advisory Commission on RakhineState chaired by former Secretary-General Kofi Annan containing recommendations for early remedial measures. We look forward to the final report of the Commission.

Madam Special Rapporteur,

We see your recommendations and benchmarks for progress ashighly relevant for both the work of the Advisory Commission on RakhineState and the Fact Finding Mission. We also believe that your work can benefit from the findings of these bodies.Do you envisage any joint action with these two mechanisms so that the impact of all the efforts for protection of human rights in Myanmar/ Burma is reinforced?
