From your Pastor
As I mentioned in last week’s bulletin, much of my time this past week has been taken up with the class on fundamental moral theology that I have been teaching to the 2020 class of permanent diaconate candidates. Whether preparing lectures, developing power-point presentations, making quizzes, grading quizzes, or finalizing the review sheet for the exam, it’s been a busy week J While I’m on the subject of the permanent diaconate, I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the kind of men who put themselves forward as candidates for the diaconate as well as something about the broader permanent diaconate program in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. As has been the case in all of the diaconate classes I’ve taught since 2005, the men that answer the call to serve the Church as permanent deacons are amazing in their love of God, in their willingness to give of themselves to the Church, and in their personal and professional lives. The vast majority of them are married, have families, and work in various career fields including medicine, law+enforcement, construction, demolition, education, business, farming (crops and dairy), and finance to name a few. Thus, in addition to very busy lives as family men and providers, they also (as well as their spouses usually) devote relatively significant amounts of time in study, prayer, and formation.
The permanent diaconate program in our Archdiocese is one of the best that I have seen or heard about – the majority of the faculty who teach the deacon candidates also serve as professors at Kenrick. The age requirements for a deacon here in St. Louis ranges from 30 years-of-age to 60, although the upper limit is negotiable. A class is formed every other year, and candidates spend their first year in discernment and prayer before being admitted into the academic portion of the program. Classes cover the normal range of theological topics including Sacraments, Fundamental Theology, Morality, Sacred Scripture, Church History, Liturgy, and Dogma etc… That portion of the program takes place over a four-year period, normally on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the fall and spring semester as well as on a few Saturdays each semester (I told you it was a relatively significant amount of time!). As you can imagine, over that span, a strong bond is formed between them. In addition, they ultimately do a wonderful job assisting their pastors and serving their fellow parishioners. They are all pretty amazing men with very generous and understanding spouses!

Please, contact the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket.
In closing, I just thought that someone or more in our parish might be moved to consider the permanent diaconate for themselves or that they might consider proposing the possibility to someone they know. As far as I am concerned, it would be nice to add a deacon to our parish.
Have a blessed week!
