  1. Introduction

This manual is an integral part of the product. The manual describes the installation and maintenance operations as well as user modes and troubleshooting.

Contents

Read the manual carefully before starting up the N2-Whisper-0LC-MS and familiarize yourself with its contents.

Modifications

Do not make any modifications to the N2-Whisper-0LC-MS unless explicit written permission has been given by the manufacturer. If such modifications are made without the manufacturer’s consent, the manufactures deny any and all responsibility for eventual consequential damage.

Information

All the information in this manual, including drawings, tables, and technical descriptions, remain the property of the manufacturer and may not be used (with the exception of the purposes herein), copied, reproduced, or published without explicit consent.

2.1FUNCTIONING PRINCIPLE

The N2-Whisper-0LC-MS separates compressed air into nitrogen and oxygen-enriched air. The separation system is based on a special membrane.

2.2Symbols Definition

Symbol / Description
or / General warning. Caution is necessary when operating the device or control close to where the symbol is placed, or to indicate that the current situation needs operator awareness or operator action in order to avoid undesirable consequences.
The manual must be consulted in all case where this symbol is marked on the device.
or / Risk of asphyxia. Caution is necessary when operating the device in a not sufficiently ventilated area.
or / Oxidant material. Caution is necessary due to the presence of oxidant material.
/ WEEE symbol. When discard this product, it must be sent to separate collection facilities for recovery and recycling.
  1. Safety

The N2-Whisper-0 is a Nitrogen Generator.

Do not let it run with the outlet open to the air in a low volume room.

The increase of the Nitrogen (and decrease of oxygen) may cause human disease.

It is the responsibility of the user to check if the room is appropriate or if an O2 measurement is necessary.

The N2-Whisper-0 reject Oxygen as waste.

Oxygen ratio in the air could change around the device in a low volume or not sufficient ventilated room.

If fuel gases are present around, their explosive or flammable limits could be affected.

It is the responsibility of the user to check if the room is appropriate or if an O2 measurement is necessary.

  1. Warning

The quantity of dust in the ambient Air can be very different from one place to another.

We recommend to replace the dust filters every 4000H.

In some dusty area, this maintenance need to be perform more frequently.

Clogged dust filter may damage the device or give a bad Nitrogen quality

If the N2-Whisper-0is used in a way not specified by VICI DBS srl, the protection provided by the equipment could be compromised.

A special characteristic of the N2-WHISPER-0LC-MS is the momentary stop of the compressor compartment if the LC-MS is not actually using nitrogen. This momentary stop is regulated by a pneumatic control valve pre-calibrated by VICIDBS to lengthen the life span of the compressors and guarantee the user savings in terms of electric energy.

5.4Separation principle

ACompressed air intake
BHollow fibre membrane
C Separation layer
DSupport layer / ENitrogen output
FRapid permeation
GSlow permeation

Atmospheric air contains nitrogen (78.1%), oxygen (20.9%), argon (1%), carbon dioxide, water vapour, and other traces of inert gas. The compressed air (A) is forced inside the hollow fibre membrane (B). The various components of the air permeate the porous membrane walls.

The speed of permeation varies from gas to gas:

  • Oxygen and water vapour have a high permeation speed and pass quickly through the membrane wall.
  • Nitrogen has a slow permeation speed and passes slowly through the membrane wall.
  • The resulting nitrogen flow is then forced out of the membrane (E) and used directly.

5.6Process Diagram

  1. Installation

Follow the paragraphs of this chapter to install the N2-Whisper-0LC-MS.

6.1Transport

ATTENTION:

Transport the N2-Whisper-0LC-MS without tipping it.

Insert the N2-Whisper-0LC-MS in the original packaging to transport it long distances.

6.2Location

Install the N2-Whisper-0LC-MSin an area with the following characteristics:

  • Minimum distance of 10 cm on front and lateral sides to allow sufficient cooling.
  • An enclosed (indoor), dry room
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Keep away from sources of heat
  • Room with adequate aeration
  • Connect a tube for waste humidity from filter B

6.3Connecting the unit to the Air Compressor

There are 2 configuration possibilities:

  • If you have a big flow compressor (like Scroll Compressor) and no tank after the WHISPER-0, please turn the red tap behind the instrument as showed in photo.

  • If you have a normal/small flow compressor and a tank (min 100 lt) after the WHISPER-0, please turn the red tap behind the instrument as showed in photo.

6.4Connecting the unit to the LC/MS

ATTENTION:

  • Check that the tubes connecting the N2-Whisper LC-MS® and the LC/MS are free from dust, grease, drops of liquid, etc. before making the connection.
  • Connect the N2-Whisper LC-MS® and the LC/MS with stainless steel tubes
  1. Operation
  2. Starting the N2-WHISPER-0LC-MS
  1. Place the generator in the set you have selected. Connect the Air Inlet (B fig.1) to the Air Line (oil free)
  2. Cut a piece of tubing from Nitrogen Inlet to the LC/MS or what needs nitrogen.
  3. Slowly open the red tap upstream from the coalescent filter B.
  4. The generator is ready to be used.

7.2Stopping the N2-WHISPER-0LC-MS

To stop the generator is sufficient to close the red tap upstream from the coalescent filter B.

  1. Troubleshooting

Error / Possible cause / Possible solution
Nitrogen flow insufficient or lacking
The internal filters are contaminated / Replace the filters
The N2-WHISPER-0LC-MS is off / Start the N2-WHISPER-0LC-MS
There is a leak in the tube / Check for possible leaks
The nitrogen outlet is obstructed / Check and clear the nitrogen outlet
Oxygen residue too high / The room temperature is less than 10°C / Raise the room temperature
The membrane no longer functions correctly / The membrane column must be replaced
  1. Maintenance
  2. Maintenance

Parts / Action / Frequency
Filters / Replace the internal filters / Annually

9.2Changing the filters

  1. Turn off the N2-WHISPER LC-MS®
  2. Close the red tap upstream from the coalescent filter B.
  3. Let the generator depressurize till the pressure is 0 bar.
  4. Remove the cap, turning it to unscrew it from the main body (1) and after that, pulling it down (2);
  5. Extract the filter cartridge pulling it down (3);
  6. Replace the filtering element and reassemble the parts in reverse order.
