Painting in Provence

with Eleanor Cox

June 28-July 12, 2014

A fourteen day painting trip to Provence is planned for June-July 2014..a time for the lavender, maybe some remaining poppies and sunflowers to enhance the characteristic views of the Luberon. Our stay will be based in the historic hill village of Bonnieux. Small enough to be easy, with good restaurants, and shopping, Bonnieux is a great painting versatile location. Our stay will be in a small eight-room guest house, with a beautiful garden and swimming pool. We have use of 7 rooms. The Luberon has a history dating back to prehistoric and Roman times and is a perennial favorite of artists.

Hosts of European Experiences, Kathy and Charley Wood stay at Le Clos du Buis when they take groups and thought it would be perfect for artists and travelers. There are double rooms, some that can be single, and even a triple. There is a common kitchen that can be used, and a room that can be for less than perfect weather. Breakfasts will be included, a light supper on arrival June 28, a mid interval dinner, and a final one, July 10. Plans are to take a winery tour, including a tasting and apertif at Domaine Faverot during one of our ten painting days, painting there in the morning, their view of the Petite Luberon.

The ten painting days will include painting the first day in Bonnieux, a day in Aix en Provence, famous for the Cours Mirabeau and Cezanne’s studio, St. Remy, chic shopping, Les Baux, the famous “white” live and dead cities, Lourmarin, ancient perched village, and cemetery where Albert Camus is buried, Arles, and Van Gogh, Cassis on the Mediterranean, Gordes and Abbaye de Senaque, and the red village of Roussillon. Market day in L’Isle- sur-la-Sorgue is on a Sunday, perhaps you may want to go there to paint a bit, and shop on your Sunday off, and stop by Fontaine de Vaucluse. Possibly a day trip to Avignon, though a city, it has great history. Other places may include the small villages of Cucuron, and Vaugines, site of the movies, “Jean De Florette,” and ”Mannon Des Sources. ” Peter Mayle’s “A Year in Provence, “ describes living in Menerbes , in the southern Vaucluse, and is the inspiration for the movie, “A Good Year.” There is also the Foret de Cedres, Lacoste, Saignon, hard to choose the best painting locations, but there will be mountains, the sea, and perched villages. Plans are underway to visit Chateaux La Canorgue.
