Audition Requirements for Jazz Band
Jazz band auditions will be held Monday, October 2nd through Thursday, October 5th in the band area. All audtions will be held after school and sign up sheets will be posted near the band office. Students will sign-in upon arrival and play on a first come, first served basis during the time blocks for each instrument type. The schedule of times is tentative. Please plan to be flexible. Once you are done playing, you are free to leave. Results will be posted on the band web site at a later date.
Jazz Band rehearsal times (also on the band google calendar).
Jazz I- Mondays and Thursdays 3-4:30
Jazz II-Mondays and Thursdays 4:30-6:00
Jazz III-Tuesdays 3-4
Audition requirements will be as follows:Winds (Saxes, Trumpet, and Trombone):
- Major Scales Bb, F, Eb, and Ab. Full range Chromatic scale also
- Jazz excerptStellar*, Measures 1-32, with the recorded accompaniment track.
- Improvise over Bflat Blues
Piano, Guitar, Bass:
- Major Scales Bb, F, Eb, and Ab. Full range Chromatic scale also
- Jazz excerptStellar*, Measures 1-32, with the recorded accompaniment track.
- Play once through solo as written.
- Play once through walking/comping over the changes.
- Improvise over Bflat Blues
Drums:
- Applicant must demonstrate rhythmic and “groove” competency in the following musical styles:Moderate Swing, “Double Time” Swing,Funk/Rock,and Bossa Nova. Lessons on the styles are available at the followinglink.
- Jazz excerptStellar*, Measures 1-32, with the recorded accompaniment track.
- Play once through solo as written.
- Play once through fill/comping over the changes.
*The printed parts and audio file for the excerpt will be available on the Band website. The audio files are in mp3 format. You will be playfing along with the Alto Sax solo track on the audio track.
