BTSALP Specialists’ Responsibilities for Professional Development

1. Faculty Training

Veteran Specialists (2 + years): Must arrange the date and time for faculty training by September 30, 2017. (This may include either you presenting to faculty, an art specialists visiting your school, or bringing 2 + classroom teachers to any of our professional development workshops.)

New Specialists (first 2 years): Must complete introductory faculty training with each of their schools (your PDP is available to come and do this with you!) by September 30, 2017.

2. Professional Development Meetings

All Specialists: Attend four(or more) professional development workshops out ofthe eight regional meetings that will occur throughout the year (see calendar below).

* Licensure Renewal Points: Each workshop is worth 2-5 points, dependent upon duration of time.

  • If you would like to observe a colleague, this valuable experience can be arranged. Contact your PDP for help arranging this opportunity.
  • Also, your PDP is available to come and help you at any time with items such as collaborative planning, lesson implementation, assessment, classroom management, faculty trainings, informances, and much more. Please do not hesitate to contact her for any reason!
  • Meet with PDP to set goals for the year and assess schedules/resources.

4:00pm – 6:30pm / Imani Gonzalez: Exploring World Cultures through Music and More
  • Open to 35 teacher participants on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Westminster College, School of Education (Malouf Building)
  • Workshop Description: Teachers examine ways to help students learn about the rich diversity of cultures through activities based on authentic children’s songs, rhythms, stories, and artifacts. Students learn about the lifestyles and values of children in these faraway countries and come to appreciate the similarities and differences between these cultures and their own.
  • Each participant will receive a copy of the compact disc and book: IYIPO AYÉ- stories and songs of the Yoruba, Ga and Shona cultures (from Cuba, Ghana and Zimbabwe), teaching respect for all cultures and traditions even the many cultures living, often misunderstood, under the same school roof.

  • Open to 35 teacher participants on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Mountain View Elementary (1380 South Navajo, SLC, Utah 84104).
  • Student Workshop Description: Hip Hop Strategies and Activities for the Classroom and Stage: Participants will explore innovative hip hop teaching methods, activities, and how these exercises enhance other areas of the core curriculum. The workshop will show how each hip hop element (Emcee, DJ, Graffiti and B-boy) can easily be transformed into creative exercises in the classroom or performance pieces.
  • Teacher Workshop Description: Rap, Clap, Write That! A pen and a paper is all you need to be a playwright! Effortlessly create characters, plots and setting using hip hop inspiration. Participants will be inspired to create poems, monologues and basic dialogue. If time permits, we will share the genius.

  • Dance Specialists, bring your classroom teachers!
  • Westminster College, School of Education (Malouf Building)
  • This is an interactive workshop that will require a bit of advanced planning. Kelby McIntyre-Martinez, from the College of Fine Arts at The U will be sharing tips and successful strategies for planning dance lessons/curriculum that stems from grade-level planning. Share in advance an academic topic that you have been asked to integrate so Kelby can help you work through Dance Integration ideas and lessons!
