Constitution

Article I: Name

The name of this organization shall be the Diving Club.

Article II: Purpose and Goals

Section One – The Diving Club is established to provide safe access to the ISU diving facilities which are otherwise off limits to nonmembers. The club supports those who have either past diving experience or those genuinely interested in the sport. The clubs aim is to allow its members to enjoy the sport of diving with others that are committed to the sport. Members will meet at least once a week for an hour and ten minutes, with the first ten minutes reserved for stretching. Exhibition diving or in-club competitions may be held if members express interest and both the President and Adviser approve.

The Diving Club abides by and supports established Iowa State University policies, State and Federal Laws and follows local ordinances and regulations. Diving Club agrees to annually complete Presidents Training, Treasurer’s Training and Adviser Training.

Article III: Membership

Membership shall be open to all registered students at Iowa State University, ISU members, and non-ISU members that have prior experience or express genuine interest in the sport of diving. All members must be in contact with the club President to be approved and receive the required waivers which must be read, signed, and turned in before any diving is to take place. This is to assure that students joining are those who understand the risks of the sport and are interested in a continued membership. Members must also agree to wear appropriate swim attire for the sport; Speedos or jammers for men and one-piece for women. Members will report any misconduct or rule breaking to one of the cabinet members and disciplinary action will be taken. First offense is a warning from the club President. Further offenses may result in immediate removal from the club and all its privileges. TheDiving Club does not discriminate on the basis of genetic information, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, race, ethnicity, sex, color, religion, national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or status as a U.S Veteran

Article IV: Officers

Officers of this club will include but are not limited to, a club President, Treasurer, and Adviser, each with responsibilities as follows.

President – Chief student leader of the organization responsible for maintaining and upholding the organizations Constitution and Bylaws. This includes keeping the Student Organizations page and constitution current and collecting signatures from both the Treasurer and Adviser whenever necessary. The President is also responsible for all membership and scheduling. Potential members must be in contact with and approved by the President for membership. The President must schedule appropriate pool time for members and keep all members informed on the time and location. The President must attempt to make it to all set meeting times and act as a supervisor and/or coach where appropriate. Duties required of the President can be shared with a Vice President if the position is created. The President is also responsible for the roles of the risk management officer which entails helping minimize potential risks for club activities, recommending risk management policies or procedures to the Diving Club, submitting documentation to ISU’s Risk management office, and to ensure that Iowa State University policies are followed at all of the organizations events, and to ensure that proper background checks are on file with risk management for events.

Treasurer – Officer authorized to deal with the organization's finances. The Diving Club has no set finances, fees, dues, or expenditures. The Treasurer must be an active member that will be available for needed signatures. The Treasurer can take initiative to secure club affiliated clothing or gear which can be sold to members and others. The Treasure is responsible for all finances around the idea of club clothing or gear. Under no circumstances can the Treasurer collect fees or dues of any kind from members without the approval of all members, the club President, and club Adviser. The Treasure is required to inform the President of the club balance at any time.

Adviser – The President will be responsible to find an Adviser for the club in the case of vacancy. Faculty member that provides guidance for the club and its officers. This position can be as involved as the individual chooses. At a minimum, the Adviser must agree to be available to the President for questions and needed signatures. The Adviser also accepts the role of settling disputes with members that cannot be solved by the President alone.

The positions of each officer will be passed on through a majority vote by all club members. Individuals can self-nominate for any position and every positon will be ratified by a majority vote. Only registered students of Iowa State University are eligible for these positions. Officer transition will take place at the end of the spring semester. Finally, all officers of this organization must meet the following requirements:

(a) Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) as stated below and meet that minimum GPA in the semester immediately prior to the election/appointment, the semester of election/appointment and semesters during the term of office. For undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, the minimum GPA is 2.00. In order for this provision to be met, at least six hours (half-time credits) must have been taken for the semester under consideration.

(b) Be in good standing with the university and enrolled: at least half time (six or more credit hours), if an undergraduate student (unless fewer credits are required to graduate in the spring and fall semesters) during the term of office, and at least half time (four or more credits), if a graduate level student (unless fewer credits are required in the final stages of their degree as defined by the Continuous Registration Requirement) during their term of office.

(c) Be ineligible to hold an office should the student fail to maintain the requirements as prescribed in (a) and (b)."

Removal of Officers or Adviser

Officers or advisers may be removed from office by ½ vote of the other officers and ¾ of the general membership if actions are deemed inappropriate by the membership. The officer is permitted to speak before the Executive Committee and the general membership about the charges made concerning his/her performance. The officer is not permitted to participate in the deliberation of the Executive Committee regarding the charges.

Reasons for removal are listed below

  1. Not following duties as stated in this document
  2. Misrepresenting the Diving Club
  3. Disrupting normal club activities

Replacement of Officer or Adviser

If an officer or adviser is removed the replacement procedure is the same as the election procedure described above. It shall take place at the first meeting following the removal of the previous officer/adviser.

Article V: Finances

The Diving Club has no set finances, fees, dues, or expenditures. In the event that a set of finances is created for the club under the agreement of all members, Treasurer, President, and Adviser, new rules must be put in place by the residing Treasurer, President, and Adviser to handle said finances. All finances created shall follow that all monies belonging to this organization shall be deposited and disbursed through a bank account established for this organization at the Campus Organizations Accounting Office and/or approved institution/office (must receive authorization via Campus Organizations Accounting Office). All funds must be deposited within 48 hours after collection. The Adviser to this organization must approve and sign each expenditure before payment.

Article VI: Amendments & Ratification

Amendments shall be made under the knowledge and voted approval of all members and the knowledge and approval of all officers and advisers. The Amendment must be in writing and signed by each residing officer and adviser. Finally, an amended or ratified constitution will be submitted within 10 days to Student Activities Center for approval.
