Dr. Lawrence A. Tomei is theAssociate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor, School of Education and Social Sciences,RobertMorrisUniversity. In that capacity, he directs the activities of academic services including the registrar’s office, academic technology and website coordination, the International Honors and Cooperative Education Programs, accreditation and curricular processes, and liaison responsibilities with financial aid, student accounts, and information technology and services.

His previous position (1994-2004) was as Assistant Professor in DuquesneUniversity’s School of Education and Director of its Program in Instructional Technology. He also served as Executive Director of the Center for Technology Education, Innovation, and Research for Technology Education Innovation and Research (TEIR). His responsibilities included graduate education courses in instructional technology including workshops, seminars, and in-service programs for practicing teachers. He is a recognized expert in the fields of educational psychology; teaching and learning strategies; and, the use of technology in the classroom.

He was born in Akron, Ohio on July 22, 1950. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) from the University of Akron in 1972,Masters of Public Administration (1975) and Masters of Education (1978)at the University of Oklahoma, Norman OK, and a Doctorate in Education (EdD) from the University of Southern California in 1983. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in June 1972 and entered the United States Air Force, serving as a computer-communications officer for most of his active duty career until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994.

Dr. Tomei serves on the Board of School Directors, Montour (Pennsylvania) School District. He is an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the International Society for Technology in Education, the American Legion, and Phi Delta Kappa.

Dr. Tomei has authored numerous articles on educational technology and five books: Professional Portfolios for Teachers (1999) and Teaching Digitally: Integrating Technology Into the Classroom (2001), both published by Christopher-Gordon Inc.; The Technology Facade, published in 2002 by Allyn & Bacon; and, Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum: Issues and Solutions (2003) andTechnology Literacy Applications in Learning Environments (Chapter 1, Defining Instructional Technology Literacy) published by Information Science Publishing. His newest text, Taxonomy for the Technology Domain: A Classification of Educational Objectives for the Technology Domain (March 2005) was also published by Information Science Publishing. In addition, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education (Idea Group Inc.) and Publisher of the International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning (TEIRCenter).

Dr. Tomei is married to the former Joan Elizabeth Johnson, an elementary school teacher. They have two daughters: Melissa (also an elementary school teacher) and Laura (radio broadcasting producer).
