Purpose

How can a simple little plant influence life and death of people? Plants are essential to life on earth in many ways. Because of the value plants have in our society, the production and marketing of plants create career and business opportunities.

Everyone wants to have a career someday that is rewarding and maybe even fun. Plant production and use have several different industries providing a variety of career opportunities or options for life-long hobbies.

Our world is growing ever more dependent upon plant production and use. To ensure we have enough supply to meet the demand we will need talented and enthusiastic people working in the industries related to plants. This lesson provides an overview of each industry and explores examples of careers you could be involved in for each industry.

Materials

Per student:

  • Pencil
  • Agriscience Notebook
  • Activity 1.1.2 Student Worksheet
  • Plant and Soil Science: Fundamentals and Applications textbook
  • Computer station with Internet access and word processing software

Procedure

In this activity, you will explore the different plant industries and the potential career opportunities involved within each respective industry. As you explore these opportunities, be thinking of how they fit your interests and future goals.

Step 1 – “Go Get It”

You will be provided a card from your teacher containing a name of a plant-related industry. Around the room, you will find cardsposted on the wall. One of those cards will have the name and other information that matches your industry. Find the matching plant industry,stand by it, and wait for a classmate to join you.

Step 2 – Collaborate with Partners

Another student in the class will also have the same industry as you. Once you both find your information card on the wall, you will record the definition and suggested career exampleofPart 1ofActivity 1.1.2 Student Worksheet.

Step 3 – Research Careers

After recording the definition and the suggested career example for your industry, you and your partner will need to think of or research two additional careers to add to the listing. You will use this information for a presentation to the rest of the class regarding your industry.

Step 4 – Share with the Class

Once the entire class is ready, your teacher will lead a discussion of ten plant industries researched by the class. You and your partner will provide the class the definition of your industry and the three career examples you identified. Be sure to record notes for the reminder industries on the Activity 1.1.2 Student Worksheet while other students in the class present.

Step 5 – Wrap up

Your teacher will assess your work. You will complete the activity by answering the Conclusion questions listed below.

Conclusion

  1. Based on what you have learned, why do you think there are so many different types of industries involved with plants?
  1. Make a list of 3-5 careers presented that sound interesting to you. Explain why these careers caught your attention as being interesting.
  1. If there are careers you wish to explore through a potential SAE project, list them below.
