Introduction
The Science Faculty at Meadowhead has much to offer. We strive to deliver stimulating, relevant, enjoyable and engaging lessons that give students a superb science education. Our staff are experienced, enthusiastic, innovative andsupportive. We are always very keen to look to the future and build upon our many successes.
We offer a range of exciting and engaging courses that are very well resourced, supported and provide an excellent pathway for continuing science beyond GCSE and ‘A’ level. Science teachers are expected to teach all areas of Science at KS3 and at least two areas at KS4. You will benefit from our schemes of work, resources, expertise and support. All teachers are expected to contribute to curriculum development.
The Curriculum
The whole school KS3 course has been designed in-house. Currently we are reviewing our KS3 curriculum and courses to ensure students are fully prepared to move to appropriate KS4 and KS5 courses and qualifications. We offer a three year KS4, with a variety of Science pathways designed to meet the needs of all students and enable them to reach their full potential.
- Currently around 20% of the cohort take Triple Sciencetaught over three years in core science time. From September 2013 Y10 students will have the opportunity to increase their science time by taking Triple science in core time plus two hours optional time.
- The majority of students take Double Award (Core and Additional).
- The faculty also offers BTEC Vocational courses at KS4 and entry level science for appropriate students.
Curriculum time for Science is allocated as follows:
KS3 / 3 x 1 hour per weekKS4 Double / 4 x 1 hour per week
KS4 Triple
KS4 Triple (Y10 from Sept) / 4 x 1 hour per week, taught over three years
6 x 1 hour per week
The 2012 KS4 Science results are included in the whole school information. In this cohort all students studied Triple Science or Core and Additional GCSE or Core GCSE. There was no BTec course.
A key priority for the Science Faculty is developing and embedding new KS4 courses to ensure all students are able to fulfil their potential at the end of Y11 and have the opportunity to access appropriate Post-16 progression routes within science.
Post 16
Since September 2010 Meadowhead School has taught Post-16 subjects through a partnership with Sheffield College. This has been very successful with Meadowhead staff teaching over 200 students for A Levels and other Level 3 Vocational courses.
Currently in Science we teach A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each A level course has five hours curriculum time. From September 2014 a BTEC level 3 course is being added to the Science offer to engage more of the students and provide progression from the successful BTEC Level 2.
Our first Sixth Form cohort completed their A levels in 2012. We were proud of our results (see Results in the whole school information) and the number of students who chose to progress to university to study science based degrees.
Accommodation and resources
We have eleven purpose-built, well maintained and dedicated science rooms and two prep rooms located on the science wing. All of our rooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards and are excellent Science teaching spaces. The facilities are very well resourced for practical work and ICT. Also supporting the faculty are a faculty admin officer and a strong team of technicians.
Staffing
There are currently fourteen teaching staff and two technicians. There is a good balance of staff in terms of ages, experience and gender.

The future
The next few years will be full of opportunity and challenge for all staff whatever level they are at in their teaching careers. We always strive to improve teaching and learning to have a real impact on progress and attainment of all students, building on existing strengths in the Faculty. In the curriculum we will need to plan for new KS4 courses from 2015 for our current Y7 students. We also continue to strengthen and develop our A level provision and improve progression routes to Higher Education and employment.
At Meadowhead School we have a real commitment to CPD for all staff and new staff can be assured that they will receive excellent support in developing their own career. JOB DESCRIPTION
The job description should be read alongside the range of professional duties of teachers as set out in PartX11 of the Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document, sections 48 to 50. The post-holder will be expected to undertake duties in line with the professional standards for qualified teachers.
Planning, Development and Co-ordination
- To set challenging teaching and learning objectives which are relevant to all pupils in their classes
- To use teaching and learning objectives to plan lessons and sequences of lessons showing how this will assess pupils learning
- To select and prepare resources, and plan for their safe and effective organisation, taking into account pupils’ interests and their learning needs, language and cultural backgrounds, with the help of support staff where appropriate.
- To contribute to teaching team, meetings and events.
- To plan for the deployment of any support staff who are contributing to pupils’ learning.
- To plan opportunities for pupils to learn in out of school contexts.
- To produce long and short term planning in accordance with school policy and procedures and within required deadlines.
- To implement and review the subject development plan in conjunction with the Senior Management Team and/or line manager.
- To develop and audit schemes of work and other documentation related to the use of Science within school and to support cross-curricular delivery including subject support for colleagues to enable curriculum requirements to be met.
