Appointment for career development, the Higher Education Ordinance (HF chap 4, section 12 a) A teacher may be appointed to a permanent position, however not for longer than four years, with the aim that the teacher should develop his/her independence as a researcher and get merits that may qualify the teacher for another teacher appointment for which the qualifications requirements are higher. The appointment may be renewed if, because of the teacher's sick leave, parental leave, or other specific reasons, more time is required to fulfil the purpose of the appointment. However, the total time of the appointment may not comprise more than six years. For other matters relating to the appointment, the Employment Protection Act applies. Exceptions from the first section may be made through collective bargaining agreements entered or approved by a central employee organisation.
In Linnaeus University's appointment procedures it is stated that two different types of career-development appointments are applied; research assistant and associate senior lecturer.
Research assistant– an appointment which through either research or pedagogical qualifying is given the opportunity to qualify for an appointment as senior lecturer or professor
Associate senior lecturer– an appointment which through either research or pedagogical qualifying, following the appointment as associate senior lecturer, is given the opportunity to be promoted to senior lecturer or professor. The requirements for the scientific/artistic skills and the pedagogical skills are to be specified in connection to the notification of the associate senior lecturer position.

The content of the appointment is to consist mainly of research. The appointment should also offer good opportunities for pedagogical qualifying through teaching on different levels as well as other pedagogical qualifying, such as training in teaching and learning in higher education.
Requirements – appointment career development
Qualified to apply is a person who has defended his/her doctoral thesis, or in other way has acquired the equivalent scientific skills. Primarily applicants who have defended their doctoral thesis or in other way acquired the equivalent skills no more than seven years before the application deadline are to be considered. (HFchap 4, section 12 a)
