Below is note from Dr. Jovanovic. Please be sure to congratulate him along with all the faculty at UALR that helped achieved this great milestone.

The UALR Civil and Construction Engineering program has received accreditation from ABET. Thank you to all who were involved in this multi-year process.

ABET will update the list of accredited programs on its website on October 1, 2014. At that time, the UALR civil and construction engineering program will appear on the list of accredited civil engineering programs, and it will also appear on the list of accredited construction engineering programs. No other university in the U.S. offers a program that is accredited in both civil engineering and construction engineering.Graduates will be prepared to work for engineering design firms, construction companies, and government agencies that are involved in the design and construction of the infrastructure that makes civilization possible, that keeps the economy running, and that enhances public safety.

UALR was authorized by ADHE to create a construction engineering program on April 30, 2010. In August 2012, UALR was authorized by ADHE to change the title of the program to civil and construction engineering. At least one student was required to graduate from the program prior to the initial accreditation visit. So, to receive accreditation in just over four years is an amazing accomplishment. The initial class of three students graduated in May 2013, leading to an ABET on-site review in October 2013. The initial accreditation is retroactive to October 1, 2012. Thus, the graduates of the first two classes (May 2013 and May 2014) can now state that they have accredited degrees.

Accreditation of the civil and construction engineering program is extremely important because the first requirement for licensure as a professional engineer is to have an accredited engineering degree. In civil engineering, many jobs require licensure. Even for those jobs that do not require licensure, promotion opportunities may be severely limited without licensure. I am very pleased that all of the graduates of the program, from the initial graduating class onward, will be able to pursue licensure as their careers progress.

Thank you again to everyone that helped get the civil and construction program up and running.

-Nick
