CERTIFICATE OF ADVANCED STUDY

The goal of the certificate program is to provide individuals who possess an undergraduatedegree, the opportunity to earn initial (provisional) New York State certification to teach music.

Admission Requirements

1. All applicants must submit undergraduate transcripts to determine the amount of undergraduate music prerequisites completed. Those who have completed all the prerequisites or are within 10 credits of completing the prerequisites can be considered for the Certificate of Advanced Study program.

2. All applicants must pass an entrance audition with members of the Music department faculty.

3. Once students have successfully completed initial certification requirements and meet theother criteria for acceptance, they can be matriculated into the Master of Science inEducation (Music Education) degree program.

Liberal Education Requirement (Requirements for College Recommendation for New York State Certification) College-level study in the areas of:

Social science: 6 credits from economics,political science, history, sociology, geography, anthropology, (not psychology);

Mathematics: 3 credits which may include statistics;

Science: 4 credits which must include a laboratory science;

Technology: 3 credits or evidence of proficiency;

Artistic expression: 3 creditsfrom music, art, drama, film, or media arts;

Languageother than English: 3 creditswhich may include American Sign Language
