Here is your challenge: Create an illustrated children's book explaining the roles, relationships and tensions between the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches of government.

Step 1: Research the three branches of government

Using the resource links above and the text as a resource, please take some time to research how the three branches of the federal government functions.

You should keep the following in mind when conducting your research:

• purposes and mandate of each branch

• main activities and components of each branch

• power relations among the branches—the authority that each branch has over the

other branches

• collaborative interactions among the branches—how they support or complement

each other in completing their respective functions

• tensions and safeguards—how the branches may limit or influence the operations of

the other branches.

You may want to use the chart in the resource area above to help you record your information.

Step 2: Organize your information

Once you have a clear understanding of the roles, relationships and tensions between the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches of government it is time to organize your information and begin to prepare your illustrated children's book. Make sure you ensure that your research:

• contains accurate and important information

• offers insightful information about the relationships and hierarchical structure

• uses concise and expressive language

• is visually appealing and easy to understand.

You will also want to:

1. Identify key vocabulary by brainstorming all the terms and concepts related to

Canada's political system, including how laws are created and passed.

2. Arrange notes charts so that they explain the role of each branch of government and

reflect the relationships between the three branches.

3. Use expressive verbs to label the relationships between the branches.

4. create and find powerful visuals to include in your children's book.

Step 3: Create your children's book outlining the roles, relationships and tensions between the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches of government.

You may choose to use whatever program you would like to in order to create your children's book. However, please feel free to use any of the following options:
