MCOMP test
Goal is to Score 15 out of 80 in 8 minutes in Fall
Goal is 25 out of 80 in Spring
Given 3 times a year
CAP
Goal is to score a 7 out of 42 in 10 minutes
4 pages long
Community Council tried both tests as a sample
Knowing what they are like is helpful in setting goals
The whole idea of common core is to move FORWARD not REVIEW BACKWARD
Teachers can't teach the answers to the questions.
Parents can answer questions.
Teachers giving the tests over and over & assigning as homework
Teachers can't teach out of their "core material"
Struggling kids - math lab
Aleks program reinforces these concepts
Kids can bring the tests to the math lab after school for help
Aleks subscriptions may be given to all students because Union is doing so well with it
Ask Ms. Hatch for questions about Aleks
Concern:
90% of parents have no idea what these tests are
Parents never see the scores
Parents need strategies to help their kids do better on this
WHO puts the scores on Skyward?
Reported to AIMS Web - Nate to look into it and find out
IDEAS TO HELP OUR KIDS DO BETTER ON THESE TESTS…
Google is a great resource
Helpful to a lot of parents
Give the parents reference info for online resources
Have a center section during PTC and have parents educated on the MCOMP & CAP
Back to school night
Add to math teacher curriculum for review
Show parents where they can go to get the answers
Have an internet tab for information on these tests and how to get the answers
Put out a skylark telling parents about the tab
Nate & Bryan may work on this after the play
Amanda Thompson said she will add these ideas to the Math Department meeting this week
Will talk about it and get back to us at the next meeting
Maybe have a booth during play practices to educate parents

Nate Edvalson - SRIs reading tests
During Social Studies 3x a year
Read and answer comprehension test
Below basic, basic, proficient and advance categories
2009 - 90% below basic of 7th graders and 72% of 8th graders are below basic
2014 - 18% of 7th graders & 22% of 8th graders are below basic
Shows we are doing better in elementary education
Mary Anderson - PAWS
Put PAWS back in 2 days a week - 30 minutes each time
Teachers want it and feel students need it when polled
Work on General reading concepts & strategies - one skill a month one class per week
One class to meet school needs - passing out things, honor roll parties, etc.
Concerns on higher readers being bored during this time/wasting their time
Possible peer tutoring from the higher readers suggested
Teachers giving all students higher reading material to help them stretch with LOTS of support for helping
Maybe tier the PAWS classes?
3 articles same concept different levels of reading - given to students based on SRI scores
Cari Hauptman will be consulted to talk about these options
Cari used to send the lexile scores out to parents - maybe send SRI scores too? Mary will check
CBMs (curriculum based measurement) -
For students falling below basic
150 wpm with minimal errors
Recommend to parents for reading class interventions
Fluency stressed and then SRI tests

Bobcat Scholar Update
January 21st - Math classes will learn about Regence Scholarship and Bobcat Scholars
Skylert to all 8th grade students/parents
Online application process
Sterling scholar and Bobcat scholar links on counseling center webpage
One month between application and portfolio
6-8 hour portfolio
All students have a gmail account they can submit it on
Teachers review info and choose winners
Students must focus on one area
Suggestions for younger kids to be educated now so they know what to shoot for
Recognize these students school wide to get them recognized
Chip Watts - SNAP plan (student neighborhood access program)
Advertise and promote safe walking routes
Union has 2 school buses for 150 students - everyone else walks/car pool
udot.utah.gov.snap - songs/videos for elementary kids
SNAP plan every year from Union
District needs to publish it or we will - Checking with Tamara Baker
State law: Crossing guards are not provided for Middle Schools
Robert Green trying to get them since 6th graders are now in middle school and used to be at elementary
Parents encouraged to walk them to identify safe walking routes
Municipalities worked with to identify missing sidewalks, etc.
Students being dropped off on 8000 south - not student drop off or pick up - signs worded wrong - now signs will say "no loading/no unloading AND no drop off/pick up"
PTSA to sign safe walking route - Jody :)
Mary Anderson - Teacher of the Year
Nomination process: March 3-7
