A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE COLUMBIA ALUMNAE CHAPTER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA, INCORPORATED, AND TO CONGRATULATE ITS MEMBERS AS THEY CELEBRATE SEVENTY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THEIR COMMUNITY, STATE, AND NATION.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that the Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta plans a Sapphire Jubilee: 70 Years of Public Service, a yearlong celebration to honor the accomplishments of the chapter and its members; and
Whereas, since its inception at Howard University in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has united its members around the particular purpose of establishing and maintaining a high standard of morality and scholarship among women; and
Whereas, in 1940, the Beta Beta Sigma Chapter began in Columbia with fifteen women who purposed to make a difference in the lives of other women and in their respective communities; and
Whereas, in 1958, the chapter changed its name to the Columbia Alumnae Chapter and soon after joined the South Atlantic Region, where it has continued its tradition of public service in educational and economic growth, community and international development, housing and urban improvement, and mental health; and
Whereas, special local projects have included black heritage seminars, career fairs, volunteer services at hospitals and homes for the elderly, volunteer reading programs at local elementary schools, voter registration drives, tutorial reading programs, health forums and workshops, and youth development programs; and
Whereas, the programs for youth emphasize opportunities specifically in the fields of mathematics, science, and technology for middle school girls in the Betty Shabazz Delta Academy Program and for high school girls in the Delta G. E. M. S. Program to prepare women to excel and pursue careers in these areas; and
Whereas, since 1962, the Columbia Alumnae Chapter has sponsored a biennial debutante cotillion, The Delta Assembly, for young ladies of high moral and scholastic standards who have been selected to participate and who spend several months prior to presentation in a wide variety of activities designed to prepare them for social, educational, and occupational success; and
Whereas, this chapter also awards several thousand dollars annually to deserving Midlands youth for college tuition as well as for summer and school year educational camps and programs; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to pause in their deliberations to recognize the valuable contributions of the Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and to express their profound appreciation for its service to the women of our great State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor and recognize the Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated, and congratulate its members as they celebrate seventy years of service to their community, State, and nation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.
