Course Description: Year IV elective in the care of Pediatric and Adolescent patients who are pregnant or have gynecologic health visits.

2-4 week duration, dates must be approved by course director

Course Objectives:

1.  Understand the principles of primary and preventative health care in the female pediatric and adolescent population.

2.  Learn the principles of antepartum care with specific attention to the adolescent age group.

3.  Describe mental health disorders as they relate to adolescents.

4.  Understand and provide counseling for adolescent females seeking contraceptive care.

5.  Describe the evaluation and management of pediatric/adolescent females with abnormal development of secondary sexual characteristics.

6.  Describe the evaluation and management of pediatric/adolescent females with pelvic pain.

7.  Describe the evaluation and management of pediatric/adolescent females with abnormal uterine bleeding.

8.  Understand how to educate adolescent females on sexuality.

Course Outline:

1.  Student will provide primary and preventative health care to pediatric and adolescent females under the supervision.

2.  Student will learn how to obtain a history and perform a targeted physical examination in pediatric and adolescent female patients with gynecologic health issues.

3.  Student will provide obstetrical care to adolescent patients

4.  Students will continue mastery of physiologic and anatomic changes of that accompany puberty

5.  Student will participate in all surgical cases done by course faculty

6.  Student will participate in care of inpatient admissions and consultations

Schedule: Varies, but generally

M-F Sign in conference 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.

W Grand rounds 7:00 a.m.

F Perinatal work rounds 12:00 p.m.

Practice Based Learning and Improvement:

Students will

1. Complete assigned reading from textbook provided

2. Identify knowledge gaps and seek out methods to correct

3. Review medical literature specific to assigned patients

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

Students will demonstrate

1. Ability to obtain medical history from patient and caregiver

2. Discussion the variety of contraceptive options for adolescents

3. Ability to educate patients and families about medical conditions

4. Communicate patient information with other members of the health care team

5. Demonstrate use of the electronic health record for documentation of history and physical examinations, progress notes, and discharge summaries

Professionalism:

Students will

1. Demonstrate ability to obtain informed consent

2. Maintain patient confidentiality and understand the reasons when confidentiality must be compromised

3. Care for adolescents in a non-judgmental manner

System Based Practice:

Students will demonstrate

1. Ability to coordinate care with referring primary care physicians

2. Understand the economic costs of unplanned pregnancies on patients, families, and society

3. Understand the principles of cost containment as related to gynecologic care.

TEACHING METHODS AND ASSESSMENT:

Course will be taught by the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. There is no designated lecture time. Elective will be spent in the care of patients, under supervision. Student is expected to demonstrate practice based learning and improvement skills when not otherwise assigned. Expected hours per week = 40-60

Weekend duty and after hours call is expected at the discretion of the course director.

Subjective evaluation and grading will be provided by the faculty upon completion of elective. Student will be required to take and pass (see grading policy) a written multiple choice question examination with emphasis on required reading assignments.

Subjective evaluation and grading will be provided by the faculty on an oral presentation by the student. The student will be required to select one patient encounter or topic of interest and prepare a short oral presentation (5-10 minutes). Students will be evaluated on clarity and comprehension of chosen topic.

Subjective evaluation by the faculty will be completed utilizing elective evaluation form (see attached). Student will receive feedback after each surgical procedure.

GRADING POLICY:

Letter Grade OR PASS/FAIL:

Letter grade will be assigned as follows:

50% of grade subjective evaluation by the faculty

Faculty will be asked to assign numerical grade

40% determined by MCQ administered throughout elective. The student will be given a MCQ during the first week of the elective. The student is expected to be able to answer questions by utilizing assigned readings. Completed examination must be submitted by noon of the final day of the elective.

10% determined by oral presentation.

Grading Scale:

93 – 100 A

85 – 92 B

75 – 84 C

74 & Below F

Mid-Point Evaluation

In accordance with LCME standard ED-30, the Course Director will evaluate student performance at mid-point to review the student’s professional, clinical and academic performance up to that point. The formative evaluation must be reviewed with the student and the student will have an opportunity to discuss with the Course Director. The form must be signed by the student and returned to the Course Director. The Course Director shall then forward a copy of the form to the Office of Academic Affairs. The form will NOT however be included in the student’s official academic record.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY:

Students will be required to attend daily as scheduled. Absences and Inclement Weather as per MUSOM rules.

Students will be given MCQ during first week of elective and may be completed at any time during the elective. Students may utilize appropriate texts and electronic resources to determine correct answers. Completed MCQ examination must be submitted to the course director by noon of the final day of the elective. Grades will be held pending evaluation of elective. Make up dates will be determined by course director.
