Note to Specification Writer:
  • This document is not intended to function as a standalone specification. It is intended to assist the specifier in inserting the proper language into the following recommended specification sections: 035413.
  • USG Durock™ Brand Quik-Top™ White and Quik-Top™ Gray Self-Leveling Underlayments are presanded cementitious underlayments designed by USG for interior use in commercial, institutional and rehab construction. They provide a smooth, hard underlayment surface over concrete slabs, prestressed concrete or concrete planks at a typical thickness from featheredge to 3 in. (76.2 mm).
  • An innovative USG technology minimizes downtime with quick set times and high production rates. This allows for trade traffic within hours of installation and installation of floor coverings within 15 hours after the underlayment is poured.

Sustainability Notes:
USG Durock™ Quik-Top White and Quik-Top Gray Self-Leveling Underlayments are defined as “Low Emitting” materials per California Department of Public Health CDPH/EHLB/Standard Method Version 1.1, 2010 (CA Section 01350) for school classroom, single-family residence and private-office modeling scenarios, and meets USGBC’s LEED® v4 emission requirements.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01EXAMINATION

  1. Site Verification of Conditions:
  1. Subfloor shall be structurally sound. Contractor shall clean subfloor to remove mud, oil, grease, and other contaminating factors before arrival of the licensed applicator.
  2. Verify concrete has been properly cured for at least 28 days and is dry. Perform anhydrous calcium chloride test, ASTM F1869. Proceed with installation only after substrates do not exceed a maximum moisture-vapor-emission rate of 5 lb of water/ per 1000 sq. ft. (1.36 kg of water/100 sq. m) in 24 hours prior to underlayment installation.
  3. If concrete contains greater than 5 lb of water / per 1000 sq. ft., the floor may require moisture mitigation.
  4. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

3.02REQUIREMENTS

  1. Leak Prevention:
  2. Fill cracks and voids in subfloor where leakage of slurry could occur using compressed building insulation, a suitable quick-setting patch material or caulk.
  1. Priming subfloor:
  2. Prime concrete subfloor using Durock®Brand Primer-Sealer according to manufacturer’s recommendations as outlined in submittal sheet.
  3. Install in accordance with reference standards and manufacturer’s instructions and as required to comply with seismic requirements.
  4. Application shall not begin until the building is enclosed, including roof, windows, and doors.

3.03GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

A. Mixing Proportions

1. Underlayment mix shall be tested for slump using a 2 inch (i.d.)x1 inch cylinder resulting a patty size of 6 ¼” – 6 ½” for Quik-Top Gray and 7 – 7 ½” for Quik-Top (white). Allow 60 seconds to elapse before measuring patty size.

B. Application

1. Place floor topping not to exceed 3” maximum thickness. Immediately

spread and screed product to a smooth surface. At substrate expansion, isolation, and other moving joints, allow joint of same width to continue to through underlayment.

  1. Final Floor Covering
  2. Floor must be dry prior to installation of finished floor or application of floor coatings. At a 1” thickness, Durock® Quik-Top will dry within 15 hours. For thicknesses greater than 1”, consult manufacturer.
  3. Field Quality Control
  4. Underlayment mix shall be tested for a slump using a 2” (i.d.) x 1” cylinder resulting a patty size of 6 ¼” – 6 ½” for Quik-Top Gray and 7 – 7 ½” for Quik-Top (white). Allow 60 seconds to elapse before measuring patty size.
  5. At least one set of three (3) molded cube samples in a brass form shall be taken for every 10,000 sq. ft. Cubes shall be tested in accordance with ASTM C472.
