Cartography Assignment

Instructions:1. Complete the following questions using the information you gathered during the classes spent mapping WHS.

  1. Attach this worksheet to your map.
  2. Both are to be handed in to me at the beginning of class Friday, Dec. 10, 2010.
  1. Complete the following table by writing in the coordinate that is at the centre of each of the following features of your map. [7C2]

Feature / Coordinate
Centre Field
The Front Steps
Intersection of St. Catherine and Hillside
East Parking Lot
West Goal Post
East Door
Bike Rack
  1. Calculate the distances between the following pairs of features using the coordinates from your table. Show all work. Verify each distance using Google Earth. [4C1], [8C2]

a)The West goal post and home plate (the Origin)

b)The East door and the bike rack

c)The intersection of St. Catherine and Hillside and the Front Steps

d)The East parking lot and centre field

  1. Find the coordinate corresponding to each of the following. [3C1] [3C2]

a)The midpoint of the bike rack and the intersection of St. Catherine and Hillside.

b)The point of the way from thefront steps to the East door

c)The point of the way from the centre field and the West goal post

  1. a) Find the equation of the line that goes through the bike rack and the intersection of St. Catherine and Hillside. [1C1] [2C2]

b) Verify that the midpoint you found in question 3.c is indeed on the line by substituting into the equation from 4.a. [2C2]

c) Show that the midpoint is in fact the midpoint by finding the distance from the midpoint to the bike rack and the distance from the midpoint to the intersection of St. Catherine and Hillside. Compare them. [2C2] [2C3]

5. Suppose WHS decided to place another bike rack on school grounds. Where do you think they should put it? In your answer, refer to the locations of other objects and the distances they would be from the bike rack. [3C1] [3C3]
