Those in attendance: Sabra Sabio, Lisa Hall-George, Mary Beth Barrios, Cynthia Mosqueda, Sheryl Kunisaki, Jason Suarez. Facilitator: Sara Blake, Humanities Basic Skills Coordinator

Those not in attendance: Barbara Jaffe, Theresa Clifford, Arturo Martinez, Arturo Hernandez, Julie Land, Trudy Meyer, Jose Villalobos, Chelvi Subramaniam.

·  Approval of Minutes from 12-9-10 - minutes were approved with no changes.

·  Update on 2010-11 Funding – Sara Blake reported that, pending finalization of the state budget, the best estimate for ECC funding this year is $211,133.

·  Report on Academic Senate for CCC Student Success Institute

o  Mary Beth Barrios, who is also a member of the statewide Basic Skills Committee for ASCCC, reported on SB 1143 (Student Success and Completion Bill) and on the general issue of performance based funding. She noted that the Task Force on Student Success is currently looking at methods for identifying success, capturing completion rates, and using data in a meaningful way.

o  Mary Beth Barrios shared the highlights of a presentation she had co-presented at the Institute on the needs of entering students and the effectiveness of counseling intervention, student engagement techniques, and interactive technology to increase student success. She shared an exemplary website from Valencia Community College.

·  Report on Reading Apprenticeship Winter Workshop

Sheryl Kunisaki and Sara Blake reported on the WestEd workshop they attended over winter break. This workshop explored methods for increasing student success by scaffolding reading activities and assignments in all content areas, using a variety of tested techniques.

·  Getting the Word Out on ECC Campus

Feedback from Flex Day Presentation – positive feedback from the flex day was shared.

o  Next Steps – Possible follow-up plans were discussed. Cynthia Mosqueda’s suggestion to offer a BSI spring workshop series was adopted.
