Family doctor takes top job at NHS Kernow

A family doctor from Gunnislake has been appointed as NHS Kernow’s new Chairman, following the retirement of Dr Colin Philip.

Dr Iain Chorlton, who is a partner at Tamar Valley Health, has been an active member of the Clinical Commissioning Group’s Governing Body since it was formed in April 2013.

He has a passion for creating an integrated health and care system and extensive experience advising providers nationally on improving primary care services, particularly around service integration in the community.

The Rev Jeffrey James, who serves in the parish of Mylor, has also been appointed as the CCG’s lay member for Patient and Public Involvement to ensure people are given a greater say in the way services are provided. As a former director of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Health Authority, Rev James brings a wealth of experience to his new role to ensure people’s experiences of healthcare can bring improvements to the system.

Dr Judy Duckworth, Serco’s former out of hours’ Deputy Medical Director, has also been confirmed as a GP member on the Governing Body for Central Cornwall. Judy also works as a GP appraiser and a medical journalist.

NHS Kernow’s Managing Director Joy Youart welcomed the appointments. She said: “I am really pleased to confirm Iain as NHS Kernow’s Chairman. During the past two years, Iain has demonstrated his passion and commitment to improve health and care services for people in Cornwall, particularly with our new out of hours’ contract and our Living Well approach.

“Iain has the support and trust of local GPs and his colleagues at NHS Kernow, who know him as someone who’s approachable, rolls up his sleeves and gets the job done. Never one to say no to a challenge, Iain knows how to enthuse everyone around him to make sure the services we commission meet people’s needs. I know he will be a successful Chairman.

“I’d also like to thank Colin for his support to establish and develop NHS Kernow, which has made great strides during the past two years to create an equitable health system. As a result, our work is being recognised at the highest levels of government as an area of success. He will be sorely missed and I wish him well for the future.”

Dr Chorlton said: “It has been an honour to work with Colin and all of the Governing Body through our first two years. Continuing our work to develop integrated healthcare built around the needs of patients will remain our priority and our focus will remain on improving the health outcomes and experience for the people of Cornwall, whilst recognising our commitment to deliver the best value from our resources.

“Further building of our relationships with all our providers of health and social care will be essential in achieving our aspirations.”

Deputy Chairman Chris Blong and Dr Sarah Bridges – Secondary Care Doctor member – have also been elected for a second term to the Governing Body.
