MDSI Code of Conduct/Honor Code

CODE OF CONDUCT: ATHLETES/Members/Non-Members

Maryland Swimming promotes good sportsmanship by athletes, coaches, members, and spectators. This Code of Conduct establishes minimum behavior expectations for all MD Swimming sanctioned events. It is to be understood anyone violating this code of conduct, will be subject to disciplinary action determined by MD Swimming’s Board of Directors or the leadership of this MD Swimming event.

The following is a minimum expectation for all members of MD Swimming as well as those non-members who compete and/or attend any MD Swimming event:

1.  Respect and show courtesy to fellow athletes, coaches, spectators, and officials at all times. If there is a disagreement with an official’s call, only the coach (real or assigned) will speak with the deck referee for verification. Parents and/or athletes shall always refer to the coach for any questions about DQ’s/times/etc. and never approach meet staff or officials directly.

2.  Set a good example of behavior and work ethic for peers.

3.  Be respectful of all others (athletes, coaches, officials, meet staff, etc.) feelings and personal space.

Anyone who exhibits sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise inappropriate behavior will be faced with consequences.

4.  Show respect and abide by all rules concerning the use of facilities (including locker rooms) at MD Swimming sanctioned events, and during team practices.

5.  Refrain from foul language, violence, and behavior deemed dishonest, offensive, or illegal.

6.  Obey USA Swimming’s rules and codes of conduct.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Failure to comply with the Code of Conduct and Honor Code as set forth in this document may result in disciplinary action. Such discipline may include, but may not be limited to:

1. Verbal Warning;

2. Disqualification from one or more events, or all events of competition;

3. Disqualification from attending future Maryland Swimming meets/events;

4. Removal from meet/event.

Note: Any appeal following any disciplinary action shall be in accordance with USA Swimming Rules and Regulations.

Meet Notices and Announcers opening remarks for each meet will contain the following statement:

We request your cooperation in creating only a positive meet environment. Negative comments and/or actions are not consistent with good sportsmanship. This meet/event is held under the dictates of The MD Swimming Honor Code/Code of Conduct available at mdswim.org. All participants, officials, management and spectators will be held to the standards set within.
