requesting consideration for Bridge Grant funding on behalf of the

applicant. This letter should describe any other non-grant funding sources, or the lack thereof.

c. A copy of the original extramural proposal and the summary statement

(critique) from the initial review group of the agency to whom it was submitted.

d. Other materials (list items below).

Budget (3):

·  Round figures up to the nearest dollar. Do not exceed maximum fundable allowances.

·  Equipment and other costs such as travel, publication and office materials will not be supported on Bridge Grant applications.

·  Salary for the PI and other faculty members are not allowed.

PERSONNEL
NAME / Role on Project / FTE on Project / Amount Requested
Principal
Investigator / Not allowed
SUBTOTAL / $
EQUIPMENT & OTHER / $
SUPPLIES (Include description, numbers and unit costs where appropriate) / $
TOTAL BUDGET REQUESTED – YEAR 1 (Maximum $50,000) / $
ESTIMATED BUDGET FOR SECOND YEAR IF ANTICIPATED / $

Budget Justification (4): Start Budget Justification on this page. Use continuation pages as needed.

All costs must be justified relative to the specific needs of the proposed research. Personnel (except for the salary of the PI or other faculty members) are allowable, provided the need for additional personnel is justified. The second year of funding may be proposed but must be well justified and will not be awarded until the progress report is reviewed and a funding update is conducted at the end of the first year. A request for second year funding does not assure such funding will be awarded.

Biographical Sketch – PI (5): Use the PHS 398 Form, which includes ongoing and completed research support during the last three years.

Biographical Sketch – Other Investigators (6): Use the PHS 398 Form, which includes ongoing and completed research support during the last three years.

Other Research Support and Applications: List all present and pending research support

with dates, titles, amounts, sources of funding and the relationship and % FTE to each project for the PI and all Co-Is. Provide a statement to clarify the independent relationship between all presently funded or proposed research programs and the research proposed in the Bridge Grant application. In the Appendix, the PI must include a copy of the abstract for each of their funded or pending applications.

If the PI currently has significant outside funding, it is very important to clearly state how this proposed project differs from the funded project(s) and how the funding of this Bridge Grant will enhance competition for extramural funds.

If the present proposal is one which has been previously submitted to an external funding

agency and was not funded, include an explanation and describe how Bridge Grant funds

will facilitate a future resubmission of the proposal.

Prospects for future funding (section G – Research Plan) should be recognized as an important point of review. A specific and detailed plan for seeking future funding should be developed and described.

Research Plan (7): Describe your research plan using the format described below. It is essential that the five page limit for Items a through c not be exceeded.

a.  Specific Aims and Relevance to Critique: State concisely and realistically what the

research described in the application is intended to accomplish and/or what overall hypothesis is to be tested in this and future grant applications on this subject. How does this application address the critique?

b.  Significance: Briefly sketch the background of the present proposal, and specifically

identify the gaps which the project is intended to fill. State concisely the importance of the proposed research.

c.  Methods and Preliminary Data: Within the page limitations, discuss the experimental design, particularly if you propose changes from that in the extramural application. Describe new methodology and its advantage over existing methodology.

Preliminary data are not expected in Bridge Grant applications, though in some cases such material may aid the review group in knowing that technical procedures are in place or understanding the rationale for a new direction.

There are no page limits for the following sections:

d.  Literature Cited

e.  Outside Facilities Available: Detailed description of UNMC facilities is not needed; however, include a statement of approval for the use of facilities outside the PI’s immediate authority or under the direction of another department/unit at UNMC.

f.  Prospects for Future Funding: Describe the most critical observations anticipated from this Bridge Grant which will enhance the competitiveness of the revised application to the extramural. Do not leave this section blank – this section requires specific prospects.

g.  Animals and Animal Care: Before funding can be released, Sponsored Programs Administration needs documentation that IACUC has approved your plans for the use and care of animals. If IACUC has approved your request, include a copy of the letter of approval from IACUC. If you have any questions regarding University or federal requirements, contact the IACUC office at 559-6463.

h.  Protection of Human Subjects: If IRB is approved prior to submission, include a copy of the letter of approval from the IRB. Contact the IRB office at 559-6463 if you have any questions regarding requirements.

i.  Recombinant DNA: If IBC is approved prior to submission, include a copy of the letter of approval from the UNMC Biosafety Committee. Contact the Biosafety Committee Chairperson, Dr. Oksana Lockridge, at 559-6032 if you have any questions regarding requirements.

NOTE: Although Bridge Grant applications will already have these in place, significant changes must be reviewed and approved prior to activation of the grant. No Bridge Grant will be approved for funding without current IACUC, IRB or IBC approval.

Appendix (8): Provide as needed.

Appendix (must include a-c)

funding sources, or the lack thereof.
