Community volunteers and organizations honored for contributions to Saginaw County

United Way of Saginaw County’s Annual Meeting and Community Awards breakfast was hosted Tuesday morning at Horizons Conference Center. The event honored volunteers and community organizations for their outstanding commitment to the community.

Two LIVE UNITED Awards were given to honor community individuals who give, advocate and volunteer every day to make Saginaw County a better place for all. Receiving the 2014 LIVE UNITED Community Award was Lawrence Sims, Brookstone LHS, LLC. The 2014 LIVE UNITED Labor Award was presented to the Tony Bell, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #557.

Herbert A. Spence III received the Harry S. Lund Outstanding Volunteer Award which recognizes a volunteer who served United Way in various capacities over many years.

The Lloyd J. Yeo Community Involvement Award was presented to Consumers Energy. This award honors a business who continually strives to create corporate citizenship within the workplace and whose employees are driven to make a positive impact.

Thomas Begin (Consumers Energy), George Heilbronn (Carpenters Local 706) and Joseph Kiss II (Bank of America) were recognized for their service and dedication to the organization as outgoing board members. Ricardo Resio was also recognized for his commitment and leadership to the organization serving as Board Chair for the past two years.

“When we look back and reflect on everything this organization has accomplished in the past year thanks to the help of our dedicated volunteers and community advocates, it is truly amazing,” said Cherrie J. Benchley, United Way of Saginaw County president/CEO. “We cannot thank our strong supporters enough for their hard work and commitment to this wonderful community.”

United Way officials highlighted the organization’s 2013 programs and accomplishments. Guests received copies of United Way’s annual report, which is also available online at www.UnitedWaySaginaw.org.
