Specifics of Use
Charging Batteries
Laptops brought to school will need to be fully charged. The power supply will not be required to e brought to school. Leaving power supplies at home reduces the weight of the equipment, students transport to and from school and reduces likelihood of damage and/or loss.
Backing Up Files
An external drive should be utilised to back up files and restore the laptop. It will be the responsibility of the student to maintain a backup of files.
Students will be required to leave the external drive being used as the backup device at home unless directed to bring it to school under special circumstances. Parents will be notified if this external drive is required at school.
Leaving external hard drives at home reduces the weight of the equipment, students transport to and from school and ensures students only bring appropriate content, related to their learning, to school.
Installing Music, Games and Programs
Games and programs are not permitted to be installed on the internal hard drive unless it is related to the student’s learning. All software installed on the laptop must be licensed. Under no circumstance is any music to be installed without the correct licensing, that is, it has either been purchased through online retailers (i.e. iTunes) or the user has the original CD.
While at school, students are only permitted to access audio/video files and programs that relate to their educational activities.
Printing
Students will have access to the printer in their class however they will be required to seek permission to print materials. Students are encouraged to print only when necessary in order to conserve paper and toner supplies.
Other Privately Owned Devices
Kuraby State School will not sanction other privately owned devices connecting to the school network, other than the nominated laptop. This exclusion includes other private laptops, and mobile broadband devices. The policy has been enacted to prevent exposure of the school network to security risks.
Internet Use at School
At school, students must agree to follow the Appropriate Use/Behaviour of School Network guidelines in relation to Internet Use. Internet access is provided by Education Queensland’s Managed Internet Service (MIS) and provides students with;
• Content-filtered Internet access
• Virus-filtered email
• School website hosting
MIS provides the means to filter students’ access to web pages from a global level; controlled by Education Queensland and from a school level.
Internet Use at Home
The laptop can be configured through both to connect to a home wireless and wired internet account.
If internet connectivity at home is enabled, parents will be able to utilise Parent Controls to filter website content. The software identifies the suitability of internet content and filters accordingly.
Parent Controls also keeps a detailed log of websites visited; websites which have been blocked, applications used and chat details.
Parental control and safe search is highly recommended.
Anti-Virus software is recommended
E-Mail Use
While at Kuraby State School, students have access to a Department of Education and
Training email account they can access from home and school. Emails are monitored for inappropriate use and language.

General Use
I agree to the conditions of use and will ensure that that they are followed
The laptop is be used only for school purposes – any personal use not connected to school work must not be present on the laptop when at school.
1. I understand it is recommended that I bring my Laptop to school each day.
2. I will ensure the Laptop is charged at the beginning of each school day.
3. I will leave the external drive containing my personal use information data at home unless directed to bring it to school under special circumstances. Parents will be notified if the external drive is required at school.
4. I will leave the Laptop charger at home unless directed to bring it to school under special circumstances.
5. I will hold the laptop with two hands when carrying it and will walk with it at all times.
6. I will use the laptop carry bag provided when transporting it around the school or to and from home.
7. I will keep food and drinks away from the laptop at school.
8. I will immediately report any accidents or breakages to my parents and teachers.
Content
9. I will use the laptop only to support my school learning program.
10. I permit my teachers and parents to perform checks to monitor that I have not installed illegal /unsuitable software applications and content and to check the websites which I visit. I understand there will be consequences for inappropriate use.
11. I am responsible to ensure that backups are regularly made of all files.
Safety and Security
12. I will only go to websites at school which support my learning activities.
13. I will be cybersafe and cybersmart when using the internet.
14. I will demonstrate etiquette when using my laptop and other equipment with regard to other people.
15. I will use the laptop lawfully and in accordance with the Appropriate Use/Behaviour of School Network guidelines regarding ethical use of equipment, technology, use of legal software, use of the internet and the protection of personal data.
16. For security reasons, I am not to share account names and passwords with anyone unless requested by School staff or school technicians. I will also not use anyone else’s user name and password.
17. I am responsible for the security and use of the laptop while at Kuraby State School
18. I understand if the above conditions are not followed, I will not be granted the authorisation to use the laptop and devices at Kuraby State School.
