CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

TRB/AASHTO/FHWA

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SUMMIT 2006

Washington, DC, Spring, 2006

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Structures Maintenance and Bridge Management Systems Committees, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Highway Subcommittee on Maintenance Task Force on Bridges and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are working together to organize and conduct a bridge maintenance conference in Spring 2006. Bridge maintenance areas of interest includepreservation, innovative repairs, products, agency programs,contracting, safety, bridge management and research.The Bridge Maintenance Summit 2006 is being planned for Washington, DC in the spring of 2006.

Topic Areas

Papers describingcase studies or practices, technological innovations, or the results of recent researchinvolvingmaintenance of bridges in the following subject areas are solicited for presentation atthe Conference:

  • Preservation or Preventive Maintenance (PM) issuessuch as best and most cost-effective procedures for PM, and how an agency can convert from reactive to proactive bridge maintenance.
  • InnovativeRepairs of damaged bridge components with emphasis on those that reduce construction time and cost, and user cost and inconvenience.
  • Performance of Products marketed for bridge preservation or repairwith specific emphasis on applicability to structural conditions, construction quality andenvironmental influences.
  • State and Local Agency Bridge Maintenance Programcharacteristics including policies, priorities, funding and implementation.
  • Contracting issues includingcontract type, documents and administration, and bid items and units of measure.
  • Safety issues includingwork zone traffic control, worker fall protection, rigging, trenching, confined space, hazardous materials and environmental pollution.
  • Use of Bridge Management Systems in maintenance operations to identify needs, set priorities, evaluate alternative procedures and identify cost-effective strategies.
  • Research Findings on bridge maintenance activities with emphasis on new technologies and future research topics.

This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and the program committee will consider papers on other bridge maintenance topics.

Due Dates

Interested practitioners, administrators and researchers should submit (1) an abstract of not morethan 500 words and (2) a 100-word biographical sketch to the Transportation Research Board at by April 1, 2005. Authors will be advised by June 1, 2005of the ProgramCommittee's decision, and authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to prepare a paper and makea presentation at the Conference. Full manuscripts will be required by October 15, 2005toaccommodate distribution of the published proceedings at the Conference.
