AFRICA: Photography and video

This exhibitionwill present over 250 works of art by African artists as well as non-African artists whose subject is Africa. Produced over the past 60 years the works in the exhibition explore the complexities of daily life across the vast continent of Africa. Artists in the exhibition include: Roger Ballen, Peter Friedl, David Goldblat, Subodh Gupta, Pieter Hugo, Alfredo Jaar, Seydou Keita, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Arnold Newman, Jackie Nickerson, George Osodi, Robin Rhode, Viviane Sassen, Malick Sidibe, Montsikelelo Veleko, George Rodger, and Lyle Owerko.

JENE HIGHSTEIN Large Stone Carvings

Executed in 1981 and weighing over 15 tons, two carved black limestone forms by American sculptor Jene Highstein fill the front gallery of the Warehouse this season. “One and Blackfish were my first large scale stone carvings and I believe that they are very important works in my overall production” explains the artist. Minimalist in sensibility, the two gigantic organic forms have a primal presence looking ancient and contemporary at the same time.

MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO Broken Mirror Painting

Widely recognized in Europe as one of its most influential contemporary artists, Michelangelo Pistoletto created a powerful performance of the Broken Mirror Paintings for the 2009 Venice Biennale. In the Margulies Collection installation of “Two Plus One” from the series, two large mirrors are installed in a room. One of the mirrors is broken and the other intact. The artist explains “the breaking of one of the two mirrors is like a small galactic explosion that multiplies the particles of reflection, and remains as the memory of a precise instant of the past ceaselessly reflected in a new present.” The dramatic power of the Broken Mirror Paintings brings to focus the innovative spirit and creative force of an artist who has influenced many artists’ performance practices of today.

Vincent Desiderio, The Triumph of Dysfunction, 1988

CONTEMPORARY PAINTINGS: Selections from the MarguliesCollection

“For the first time we will be exhibiting paintings at the Warehouse” explains longtime curator Katherine Hinds “some of which have been in storage since we acquired the works, others of which we have added to the collection recently. One of the works is a gigantic 30’ diptych from 1988 by the American painter, Vincent Desiderio, which has never been seen since it was exhibited at the Denver Art Museum in 1990.” Included in the exhibition will be works by William Beckman, Oliver Dorfer, Jonathan Meese, Chris Ofili and Tal R.

BRIAN ALFRED Digital Animation

A new animated video by Brooklyn artist Brian Alfred will highlight the 18 permanent video installations at the Warehouse this season. Alfred’s work comments on how our perception of the world is altered by the ubiquity of information. His animations explore how the world has changed through the use of new media technology and in particular the visual manifestation of how information is shared and disseminated throughout popular culture. For the viewer, Alfred’s works recreate the same powerful hold as the images we witness everyday in the media. Accompanying the compelling animated images of simmering urban violence is a sound track of eight different musical collaborators which enhances thevideo’s dreamlike atmosphere. Also included in the video installations this year are videos by Peter Friedl, Cory Archangel, Cristina Petterson, Fishli & Weiss and Bill Viola.
