Dear Prospective Student Council Member,
The St. Augustine High School student council is elected through student vote and by a combination of teacher recommendations, essay and an interview with administration and advisors.
The Student Council requires a significant commitment. This time commitment includes time during the summer, after school, and on weekends. Though council members are responsible for planning events and fostering school spirit, serving on the student council is also about looking within and learning leadership skills.
Student Council service fosters a capacity for leadership, creates an understanding of the importance of leadership in a democratic society and to prepares students to assume leadership roles in the school and community. In addition the student council is responsible for supporting school activities and events such as open house, athletics, performing arts, and other clubs’ activities.
The council also plans many school wide activities throughout the year including pep assemblies, homecoming week, community service, and a welcome event for new students.
As elected student body leaders, each member of Student Council is required to set an appropriate example for others at all times (both in and out of the classroom). Student leaders are required to promote school spirit, pride, and attend all Student Council activities.
Students will be placed on probation for the following reasons: Un-weighted, cumulative grade point average below 2.0, violation of the St. Augustine High School participation agreement, or inappropriate use of social media.
Student Council is a fun and active service opportunity. We are very excited that you want to be a part of it. Student Leaders have high expectations, which each member is held accountable for both inside and outside of St. Augustine High School.
Please submit completed packet by August 5, 2016.
Sincerely,
Ms. Kina Lee
Dear Parents /Guardians,
St. Augustine High School has a vibrant student government program that develops leadership skills and calls our elected council members to be servant-leaders.
After a week of campaigning, the students elect class officers and student body officers to represent them for the school year. The Student Council is responsible for a multitude of student activities as well acting as student liaison to the faculty and administration.
As the student body’s elected officials, council members are the most visible of St. Augustine’s leaders. They work directly with faculty and staff to build school pride and play a significant role in helping maintain the school’s focus on its mission. All council activities promote school spirit, the sense of community and a respect for the code of the Purple Knight.
Through their involvement in open house, homecoming week, and Knight for a Day programs, the student council members are enthusiastic ambassadors for the school. Their pep assemblies and special theme days enliven the campus with spirit and fun. Their constant attention to community service and the concern for causes in local and global communities is evidenced by their voter registration drives, Christmas toy drives and Random Acts of Kindness week. Their response to fellow students in need, whether through prayer or other kind of support, is immediate and genuine.
The Student Council performs a challenging and rewarding role in the St. Augustine community and students who are interested in pursuing their leadership skills are always encouraged to get involved.
Sincerely,
Ms. Kina Lee
