Purpose / This unit standard is for people working as building or school caretakers.
People credited with this standard are able to: maintain grounds; and maintain play areas and equipment.

Explanatory notes

1 Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of:

Employment Relations Act 2000;

Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996;

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;

Smoke-free Environments Act 1990;

Health and Safety Code of Practice for Schools, Ministry of Education, 2005;

SNZ HB 5828.1:2006 General playground equipment and surfacing handbook.

2 Equipment and cleaning agents must be used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

3 Definition

Industry best practice refers to enterprise or establishment or facility requirements, practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards.

Outcome 1

Maintain grounds.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Asphalt and concrete areas are maintained and clearly marked in accordance with industry best practice.

Range swept, weed free, spot sprayed (if required), marked out and/or remarked.

1.2 Playing fields are tended on a seasonal basis in accordance with industry best practice.

Range grass cut, ground levelled (if required), top-dressed (if required), marked out and/or remarked.

1.3 Gardens and lawns are tended on a seasonal basis in accordance with industry best practice.

Range lawns cut, gardens and lawns weeded, fertilised, planted, pruned, weeds sprayed (if required), edges trimmed.

1.4 Drainage systems are cleaned and maintained with sufficient frequency to ensure efficient operation in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

Range storm water drains, storm water gratings, spouting, down pipes, field drainage systems (if fitted).

1.5 Fence lines and boundaries are kept in a neat and tidy condition in accordance with industry best practice.

1.6 Litter and rubbish is removed on a scheduled basis in accordance with industry best practice.

1.7 Tasks are completed without risk or damage to others at facility.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Play equipment is established and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

2.2 Equipment is inspected on a regular basis in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

2.3 Faulty or damaged equipment is repaired, replaced, or made inoperable as soon as detected in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

2.4 Sports posts are erected and removed as required.
