PHCC – Poole Harbour Race - 10th Sept 2017

The Poole Harbour race is a challenging event open to all classes of boats. It is a non standard, non ranking race due to the exposed open water conditions and the Le Mans style beach start.

Venue Lake Pier, Lake Drive, BH15 4LR. Use satellite view to spot the large waterside car park with a T shaped pier

There are three distances. The 15 and 8 mile courses circumnavigate Brownsea island and involve large stretches of exposed open water. The 4 mile course is run close to the shore with fewer hazards than the longer races.

·  Fast boats eg Skis and RSK Racing Sea Kayak (over 5.5m or with rudder) compete in 15 or 8 mile only. A time limit of 90 minutes to reach half way is imposed for the 15 mile.

·  Slow boats eg General Purpose boats and Heavyweight canoes compete in 4 mile only.

·  Other boats have categories in more than one distance.

·  CSK Classic sea kayaks (without rudders and under 5.5m) and Fast Single bladed solo paddlers C1, OC1 and Stand Up Paddle boards have separate categories for the 8 mile.

·  Any race with fewer than 3 competitors may be merged with another race.

Safety Notes.

It will be choppy! Most problems result from taking on water. It is recommended you have a good spray-deck and footwear for the beach start and that you have 3* paddling ability for the 15 and 8 mile course and 1* for the 4 mile.

Hazards are numerous, Racing yachts, Jet skiers, Water skiers, mooring lines, buoys and deep soft mud beneath the shallow water so beware if emptying your boat.
