An Invitation

The Ewanrigg Local Trust invites you to a lively talk with Sugata Mitra on October 8th 5-7pm on October 8th at Ewanrigg Junior School, Maryport.

Sugata Mitra is Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University, UK and was given the $1m TED Prize in 2013 to help build a School in the Cloud, a creative online space where children from all over the world can gather to answer 'big questions', share knowledge and benefit from help and guidance from online educators. For more information see…

Much of Sugata’s current research builds on his Hole in the Wall experiment. Children were given free access to a computer embedded within a wall between his office and an Indian slum at Kalkaji, Delhi. This, and further experiments into children’s learning, have demonstrated that groups of children, irrespective of who or where they are, can learn to use computers and the Internet on their own in a public space. The Hole in the Wall experiment has also left a mark on popular culture. Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup read about Mitra's experiment and was inspired to write his debut novel that went on to become the Oscar winning movie of 2009 - Slumdog Millionaire.

The talk is aimed at all people living and working in Ewanrigg, and people working with young people and communities in the local area. This is not an academic lecture; Sugata is an inspiring, approachable and funny speaker and will be followed by an honest, open, informal discussion about how the Ewanrigg Local Trust can reach its aim of helpingmembers of the community of all ages believe the ‘door to the world’ is open and they can stride through it with a ‘can do’ approach and with the ideas, skills and confidence to make things happen. We hope that the evening will be motivating and provide food for thought leading to practical plans.

Numbers are restricted at this event because we want the evening to feel like a discussion rather than a lecture so please only book if you are confident you can attend. Places are free but will be offered on a ‘first come first served basis’. To book a place please rsvp to .
