Nominations Sought for Exemplary Students

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Good students are prevalent throughout our region, and RESA 2 wants to recognize some of those who are truly exemplary, especially when it comes to helping their communities.

The Regional Education Service Agency serving Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, Mingo and Wayne counties wants to honor up to 12 students each academic year. Leadership, talent and academic ability will be part of the evaluation process, but judges will place particular emphasis on the students’ passion for service.

All winners must be a middle school or high school student in one of the six counties that make up RESA 2’s service area.

“We’re proud of the outstanding young people who attend schools in our area, and we want to highlight their accomplishments,” said Dee Cockrille, executive director of RESA 2. “Service is a vital component of building a strong community and state. We want to make examples of exemplary students.”

A panel of judges will select students, expected to be two representing each county, and those chosen will be honored at a June banquet at the RESA 2 headquarters in Huntington.

Worthy students can be nominated by any non-related teacher or administrator in their county. Nominators should provide a 300- to 400-word description detailing why the student is exemplary. Among the items that should be covered are:

·  Excellence in academic achievement;

·  Demonstrated interest in service;

·  Proof of passion for the value of education;

·  Examples of leadership and community involvement that show a path to being an exemplary citizen.

Students selected will receive a $100 savings bond and a plaque in recognition of their accomplishments, and information will be submitted to local media outlets.

Nomination forms are available at the RESA 2 office at 2001 McCoy Road in Huntington or by e-mailing Sandy Shoup at . Nomination forms also will be available through individual school principals beginning in January.
