NORTH BRUNSWICK TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL COURSE PROFICIENCY

College Prep Chemistry

Grades 10, 11, 12

Six (6) credits – one year

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra I or its equivalent

Course Description:

This is a college preparatory course designed to acquaint students with the fundamentals of chemistry. Structure of the atom, the dynamics of chemical reactions, energy, the phases of matter, and electrochemistry are discussed. Quantitative relationships are emphasized. Laboratory experience is an integral part of the course.

Proficiencies:

At the completion of the course the student should be able to:

1.Utilize the properties of solids, liquids, and gases to explain the molecular and atomic model of matter.

2.Utilize conversion factors to change to other units.

3.Balance equations and solve stoichiometric problems utilizing the mole concept.

4.Name the symbols of elements and compounds, and write correct formulas of common compounds.

5.Explain energy changes in physical, chemical, and nuclear reactions.

6.Explain the concepts of atomic structure in terms of particles and waves.

7.Possessing a periodic table of elements, explain and predict elemental periodicity in terms of ionization energies, size of atoms; melting and freezing points, and chemical reactivity.

8.Draw and interpret a potential energy diagram and kinetic energy distribution curve in relationship to energy and temperature changes in chemical reactions.

9.Explain solubility, acids and bases, and oxidation-reduction in terms of equilibrium.

10.Successfully utilize the calculation in solving problems.

Course Requirements:

1.Students will be expected to maintain a satisfactory level of participation and preparedness. Students are expected to bring necessary supplies to class daily.

2.Students will be expected to attend class regularly with class attendance counting as part of a weekly performance grade.

3.Students will be expected to complete all assignments.

4.Students will be expected to successfully accomplish all graded work, which include unit test, quizzes, and report, and all class projects.

5.Students will be cooperative in class and contribute to the growth of the class.

6.Students will be expected to apply math skills to various chemical problems.

7.Students will be expected to take detailed, organized notes.

8.Students will be expected to be prepared for all laboratory experiments, keep a clean work area, and observe all safety rules at all times.

9.Students will be expected to follow instructions given in class and in the lab.
