GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SPRING 2010 PROGRAM
Alternative Break
Alternative Break is a student-managed organization, which endeavors to provideservice-learning experiences to the Carnegie Mellon community. Alternative Breakaccomplishes this goal by planning student trips that involve participating in experientialservice-learning opportunities, pre-departure educational sessions, academic credit, and outreach sessions to share these experiences with the larger campus and regionalcommunity. Previous Alternative Break trips include Immigration Studies in the UnitedStates and Mexico border region, Hurricane Relief in the Gulf Coast,Environmentalism and Spanish Culture at the Congal Biomarine Reserve in Ecuador, and Native culture in Peru.
Spring 2010 International Program:
We will be going to the Dominican Republic towork with a local orphanage and volunteer in an elementary school for the week of March 6th to March 13th, 2010 (Spring Break). We will be going through anorganization called Orphanage-Outreach that has hosted many college studentson past Spring Break trips. It will take place in the province of MontiCristi in northwest DR. The mission of orphanage-outreach is to provideopportunities to orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children. Ourvision is to be a part of this mission and make a difference in the lives ofyouth and learn from these children as we observe the inequalities withinLatin America through first-hand experience. There are no limits on theservice opportunities available to participants as they serve and educateyouth within these communities.
