Year 3 and 4 Written Papers Assessment Lead (0.2 FTE)

In the new five-year Bachelor of Medicine programme, BM5, the assessment at the end of Year 3 comprises a 16 station OSCE examination and an MCQ examination assessing the content of the Scientific Basis of Medicine (SBOM) module. Year 4 students are assessed by two written papers: a 2-hour MCQ paper and a 2-hour problem solving paper based on clinical vignettes which may be answered in a multiple choice or constructed response format. The Year 4 written papers focus predominantly on the clinical areas covered in that year, namely; Child Health, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Genito-urinary Medicine, Acute Care and Specialties (Head and Neck, Neurology, Dermatology and Ophthalmology). However it is a synoptic assessment in that it takes an inclusive overview of the BM programmes so far and students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the basic science and clinical principles learned in the earlier years of the curriculum.

The post holder willact as Module Leader for the Year 3 andYear 4 assessment modules,be responsible for developing the Year 3 SBOM MCQ for the main exam in July plus a supplementary opportunity in August,as well as the two Year 4 written papers in June and supplementary opportunities in July. The post holder will contribute to the development of new items and the refinement of banked items in liaison with the medical schools council assessment alliance (MSC-AA),including attending the twice yearly item review meetings. Theywill consider and respond to examiner and student feedback as well as psychometric data (with the support of the Director of UG Assessments) to consider how specific items need to be improved.

The post holder will be supported in this role by the Director of UG Assessments, the Year 3 and Year 4 Leads, the SBOM Module Lead and the clinical module leads from Years 3 and 4. The post holder will receive administrative support from the Exams and Assessments team and will be expected to draw widely on the experience and assistance of clinical staff to develop new questions that reflect the breadth of the clinical curriculum in Years 3 and 4.

It is anticipated that the post holder should be able to fulfil their role in the equivalent of 1 day a week although this will need to be flexible at different times of the academic year.

Year 5 Joint Clinical Assessment Lead (0.2 FTE)

In the new BM curriculum,Finals takes place in January ofYear 5 to give students who fail a second opportunity toenable them to take up their Foundation Programme post. A key component of Finals is the OSCEwhich in the new curriculum will change to a sequential examination where all students will complete 10 stations which will then be marked at which point it will be clear that a number of students have clearly achieved the standard required and do not require any further assessment. A proportion of students will need further assessment and will go on to be examined in a further 10 stations. The format of the OSCE examination will otherwise remain unchanged from the current model other than the length of the individual stations will increase from 6 minutes to 9 minutes.

The post holder will be responsible for developing two 10 station OSCE circuits for the main finals examination and the 20 station supplementary opportunity (with the support of clinical staff from Years 4 and 5).Theywill work alongside and jointly with the BM Finals Clinical Assessment Lead who will retain primary responsibility for developing the replacement to the BM Finals Clinical Summary paper and for designing and implementing the “ACC at Finals assessment”. The post holder will also work with the Year 3 OSCE and MIP2 OSCE leads to contribute to the design and implementation of the Year 3 and MIP2 OSCEs,also with the simulated patientand volunteer patient team to facilitate recruitment and training, including chairing the volunteer patient working group.

The post holder will work with the clinical skills team to ensure that clinical skills appropriate to Finals are assessed and will contribute to examiner training. In liaison with the Director of UG Assessments,the post holder will prepare data and feedback to report back to the medical schools council assessment alliance (MSC-AA) and/or the GMC. They will also needtoconsider and respond to examiner and student feedback as well as psychometric data (with the support of the Director of UG Assessments) to consider how specific items need to be improved.

The post holder, along with the current Joint Clinical Assessment Lead, will be supported in this role by and report to the Director of UG Assessments. They will also be supported by the Year 4 and 5 Leads and the clinical module leads from these years. The post holder will receive administrative support from the exams and assessments team and will be expected to draw widely on the experience and assistance of clinical staff to develop new OSCE stations that reflect the breadth of the clinical curriculum in years 4 and 5.

It is anticipated that the post holder should be able to fulfil their role in the equivalent of 1 day a week although this will need to be flexible at different times of the academic year. In particular the post holder will need to ensure that they are available on before and after the Finals OSCE, Finals Generic ACC circuit, and Year 3 OSCE dates.

Year 5 MCQ Paper Lead (0.1 FTE)

In the new BM curriculum,Finals takes place in January of Year 5 to give students who fail a second opportunity toenable them to take up their Foundation Programme post. The final year examination consists of four components: successful completion of ACC’s, a sequential OSCE, a Clinical Summary and Critical Appraisal written paper and two MCQ papers, each of 2 hours duration, comprising OBA (one best answer) and EMI (extended matching items) questions.

The post holder will be responsible for developingtwo MCQ papers for Finals in January and two for the supplementary opportunity in the summer.They will contribute to the development of new items and the refinement of banked items in liaison with the medical schools council assessment alliance (MSC-AA), including attending the twice yearly item review meetings. In liaison with Director of UG Assessments, the post holder will prepare data and feedback to report back to the medical schools council assessment alliance (MSC-AA) and/or the GMC.

The post holder will be supported in this role by the Director of UG Assessments, the Year 4 and Year 5 Leads and the clinical module leads from years 4 and 5.
